It's not just that he's conservative, it's that on certain topics he turns into this complete freak incapable of rational discussion, angry and bitter and sarcastic and mean. My sister and I have both tried to get him to stop, at least in front of the kids (he's pretty scary when he gets going), but he interprets our efforts as personal attacks. Ugh.

I think we need to send your dad and my dad someplace nice like a white supremacist campground for all major holidays. What the hell is up with all this? I don't know about your dad, but mine used to be relatively liberal. For the last 10 years or so, though, he's been getting steadily worse. At Xmas last year he actually went all the way to full-fledged out-and-out racism, in an obnoxious way. I don't want my nephews hearing that crap.

There was an article around Christmastime last year on Salon.com by Wil Weaton (known by most for his role in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he should be known more for his awesome blog) about having a confrontation with his father about the Tookie Williams execution last year. The letters to the editor told a lot of stories of other people having to deal with conflicting political views from their parents.

Most interestingly, Wil followed up the article with an interview with his parents after the article was published on his blog. They were understandably upset at his portrayal of them in his article, and he wanted to give them a chance to tell their side of the story.

I think I told mine that what he was saying was completely inappropriate and it wasn't acceptable to me and that I didn't want to spend any time at all with someone like that.

You'd think it would have spurred him on, but he shut up instead.

That's kind of her point -- apparently, tmdiva's father is a Not Fan of the ACLU, and seems to think that anything traditional going on at school will be opposed by those Commie Bastards who took God out of the classroom, and replaced Him with touchy-feely Wiccan socialistic nonsense, like New Math, "winter concert" instead of Christmas Play, and don't even get me started on the "whole language" reading fiasco instead of sounding words out.
Am I missing something? The old man was spot on.

Monkey, I'm the only liberal in my family, but not the only one who thinks my dad is scary while ranting. And I don't think saying STOP repeatedly, while you're trying to say goodbye on your way out the door to the airport to fly home, is a personal attack.

My parents are pretty much the opposite of conservative, but still can be incredibly annoying in their own special way. Sometimes a little talking-to helps, but I think most of the time they are just set in their ways and it's really hard to get anything into their skulls.

You all are making me kind of grateful for my atheist commie parents though. So thanks. I think I will be nicer to them.

I have an atheist commie mom and a freaky conservative dad. I am OK with him as long as he isn't being deliberately downright offensive in front of small children (and me). I would probably be as offended if my mom was going off on a harangue about how god doesn't exist and all people who believe in god are brainwashed idiots, or something.

I understand because the Fugee Dad was pretty conservative and would go off on rants about issues. But now after he's died, I'd put up with a lot of ranting just to have him back for the non-ranting times.

My suggestion is that you talk to your dad and let him know that the time you and the family have with him is so precious that you don't want to waste a minute disagreeing on political issues. Neither or you is going to change the others' minds so what is the point? If my Dad were around and had made the ACLU comment, I would have just ignored it and changed the subject as quickly as possible.

My father has five brothers, I don't know how they do it, but they all are very different politically, and are all absolutely sure they are 100% right when it comes to their views on all the issues. My father makes Ty look like a reactionary conservative and the uncle I was named after makes Buchanan seems like a reasonable liberal. It wouldn't be so bad if some of them actually read an article or watched the news at some point in their lives, but they all have opinions and no facts.

At family reunions, when politics every comes up everyone (except my uncles) leaves the room. That has actually worked quite well. Politics didn't come up once at the last reunion.

I was in such a room-clearing discussion once, with my brothers and father, and resolved then and there never to discuss politics with my family again. (In my defense, I was only about 18.)

If it is directed at someone in particular, the most I would do is a private conversation with him, to tell him nicely that those comments are no appreciated.

Though if it were my dad, I wouldn't bother even under those circumstances, as this sort of comment is a 2 on his rudeness scale.
