BR(oh, Miss Polly Prissy Pants, I'm afraid no one loves you, so you won't be adopted and you'll never have parents again ever!)C
Yeah, I never claimed we weren't fucked up. Though I doubt we had abandonment concerns at the time, as we used to fight about who was adopted, from the perspective that being adopted was better than actually being born to these people. And therefore sharing genes with them.

Is it the snotty suburb that you live in (despite your scorn for people who live in such places and are otherwise conspicuous consumers) that has taught you this?

Snotty and snooty are not far enough apart in meaning for your correcting one to the other to constitute telling me that my post made no sense.

Ottoman as Coffee Table

Yes, I know it is Saturday night and coffee tables should not be on my mind but I'm in need of fashionable living room advice. I have a small traditional cape cod house with a small living room and I went too big on my new upholstered sofa and coordinating (or so it was supposed to be) armchair with matching ottoman. Mom says the chair, which is cattycornered (sp?) with the ottoman is too overwhelming for the room, and so I need to (1) get rid of the coffee table in front of the sofa; and (2) use the ottoman (that matches the armchair) instead in front of the sofa (to put feet on). She says people used to do this and when you want to put stuff like drinks on the ottoman, you'd put a tray on the ottoman. This seems fussy and dangerous with a 2 year old. Is anyone using an ottoman as a coffee table? Or have a furnished living room without a coffee table? If I need one, any suggestions for a more compact/narrow one? The decor in the room is hopelessly mix matched with stuff from my travels, mostly Asia and Africa. And here is my area rug: http://www.einsteinmoomjy.com/produc...5&idproduct=80

Thank you fashionistas.

While shopping for my couch I ran into ottomans whose top pillow flipped over, serving as footrests as well as coffee table-like trays. Jensen Lewis has them, but not on their website.

I did a search for "convertible ottomans" and found this one, which I wouldn't ever put in my house, but there have to be some decent ones out there somewhere:

When my brother played the bassoon, it made a very loud throaty noise most often heard bellowed by large mammals in pain. The dogs would plead to be let outside as soon as they heard the latches open on the bassoon case. My dad, who I think overplayed his difficulty with words when it suited him, called it the "bazooka."

If any of you are considering a musical instrument for a child who lives in your house, I would recommend the electric guitar -- without the amplifier. Get the amplifier later once the kid's gotten good enough to join a band. Band practice is always held in the drummer's garage.
I'd like this half minute back.

Hmmn. That's an interesting concept - convertible. Only thing is, the ottoman is already in existence. I wonder if it could be converted into a covertible (: I'm looking to see whether anyone uses trays on their ottomans and am finding some images which suggest some do. I had never thought of it. Here's an example, except my ottoman is smaller (for an armchair):

Actually, I have a trunk that I use as a coffee table (yes, it's a leftover from college, but I no longer know how I'd replace the storage space), and I sometimes use trays on that, despite the flat wooden top. Not sure why a tray would be more dangerous around a 2 y.o. than the 2 y.o. just pulling the stuff off the coffee table/ottoman sans tray, but I haven't got a 2 y.o. to demonstrate so ... certainly having a 2 y.o. trip and do a face-plant onto a cushioned ottoman sounds safer than having it do the same thing on a regular table with edges.

Actually, this weekend I was at a house with a coffee table I quite liked, so I have been thinking of coffee tables, too. It was a low rustic-looking African table, about 4 feet by 6 feet in size, with two sofas facing it from either side. (This was a nice big house in the suburbs, so they had room for it.) All manner of art books and african statues were on it, and it was big enough that it didn't look crowded. They had kids, though all beyond the "chew/break everything in reach" stage. It really looked super, though if I were to put that coffee table in my apartment there would be like 6 inches between its sides and the sofa & opposite wall.

These folks also used a tray for munchies and drinks and what not. Still not sure I understand the tray concerns. Then again, I have a couple nice silver trays that arrived with the wedding stuff, and, damnit, if I'm gonna polish them I'm gonna use them.

The BCS sucks for many more reasons than this. Put aside the Auburn problem, which would happen regardless of what system, other than a playoff, you use. The biggest joke is that Pittsburgh is in and Cal is not. And wouldn't a Utah-Auburn game be a bit more enticing, although it would make even more obvious that there are three undefeated teams not playing for the national championship.
