Not sure why I'm even explaining, but it was my friends' commitment ceremony in another friend's backyard, and they had guests coming in from all over from age 5 to 80. They wanted to convey that they wanted people to be comfortable but a bit dressy and summery, not like they were at a clambake. It's a wedding and a happy, lighthearted affair, it fit their day, and what counts is that the guests understood what they meant.

I'm getting all confused. I thought someone else (a sock?) was asking about appropriate attire to be worn at a church ceremony where the groomsmen would not be wearing tuxes. And now we're talking clambake? Who the hell would go to a chuch wedding in capris and flip flops. And if that was a real concern, then the invitation should have said "semi-formal" which runs the range of nice suit, sportcoat/slacks, dress, skirt, etc.
I will check my miss manners book, but when it comes to dress requirements aren't there only 4? White tie, black tie, semi-formal and casual?
