Amanda and David most definitely had sex the night before Amanda was evicted from the house (BB fans were hoping this would kick off a tradition that the lame duck would get his/her choice of booty on his/her last night).

But it's not the first time. Will and Shannon had sex on BB2, or something close enough to it as makes no difference. They didn't show it on the CBS show but it was very evident (so I'm told) on the live feeds. And let me just say that damn that Shannon was fine.

A few years back (before I was a lawyer) I worked in an office building near the Stanford hospital. We shared a floor with a renowned gender dysphoria clinic and the offices shared common restrooms. When I first started working in the building, I was amazed at how many women could pee standing up and I wondered if there was something my mother had forgotten to tell me. Once I realized that gender was a transitory thing, I started to appreciate how difficult it must have been for the patients of the clinic. Which bathroom? Stand up or sit down? And on and on.

I remember a kid from high school who moved to New York, became a woman and hung out in the Andy Warhol crowd. She was always willowy and cute and most of my high school friends thought she made the absolutely correct choice.

What percentage of transgendered people are gay? After surgery I mean. I have the impression (based on nothing whatsoever) that the percentage is fairly high.

I don't know percentage, but I know it is quite common for the transgendered male to female folk to be gay. I am probably speaking out of turn though, it is just of the ones I know, they are with women.

I don't know about transgendered women, I think frequently they are straight, but I don't actually know any transgendered women who are out as transgendered.

I know a pre-op transsexual, and s/he has demonstrated why they're required to go through intense psych evaluations before they're allowed to go through the whole thing. S/he has told me that s/he's a lesbian and that s/he won't have to ever deal with harrassment from men because of that. S/he's also into sending around women-power quotes to all the women s/he knows. When s/he was clearly a he, he'd been prosecuted for stalking an ex. S/he currently works at a Barnes & Noble in Atlanta, but I think that s/he was having difficulties with work because of em's new status. The judge that s/he went to for em's name change wouldn't let em make the change because the judge felt that the whole thing was wrong.

On a similar vein, thanks to storms in Houston yesterday, my flight was delayed four hours after we'd boarded, and I was able to finish Middlesex. At times it got to be a bit tedious, but I really enjoyed the characters. Euginedes talks at one point about emotions being extraordinarily complex and simple words like "sad" or "disappointed" don't convey that complexity. This book, I thought, was very good at showing the range of complexity of human emotion.

Not quite the same thing, but this discussion reminds me of Eddie Izzard's act - he discusses the fact that many transvestites are actually straight, and tells the audience to think of him as a lesbian trapped in a man's body.

As someone who was forcibly transgendered by paigow one afternoon on the old FB, I can tell you it had no effect whatsoever on my sexual appetites or orientations. I suggest that further study of Penske in this regard is in order, however. NTTAWWT.

A friend of mine hung out in his studio in New Orleans quite a bit last year doing some artwork for him. Said he as a very cool, very nice guy.

I always wondered about the gay issue. The transgendered person that I knew of, was in a hetero relationship before she made the transition. The relationship survived the surgery, so does that make them gay?

The one transgendered person that I knew (she has fallen out of my circle of friends) was pretty psychologically messed up. I don't think any doctor would carry through on the surgery for her. I did really feel for her and hope that some of the required counseling would help with her apparent pain/depression.

Re: Middlesex, I read the beginning and then put it down for something that I was more interested in at the time. It would be hard to pick back up again at this point, but maybe I'll do so while travelling this fall/winter.

I know it is confusing, I find it so still, but I am learning.

Think of it this way. We have our sex (gender), and we have our sexuality. Most people are born with both the correct gender for themselves and heterosexual sexuality.

I.e. a man is born male, is comfortable in his body as a male and is attracted to women.

A woman is born female, is comfortable in her body as a female, and is attracted to men.

That is most of you reading this board, and most people in general.

Some people are born with the correct gender for themselves and homosexual sexuality (or perhaps bisexual sexuality.)

I.e. someone like myself, a woman comfortable in her body as a woman, but attracted to women instead of men

Still other people are born with the incorrect gender for themselves, but, they are heterosexual until they correct their gender, at which point they become homosexual.

I.e. a man who was born male and is attracted to women (heterosexual) but was born the incorrect sex and has surgery to correct this becoming both female and homosexual.

And finally others are born with the incorrect gender for themselves, but they are homosexual, until they correct their gender, at which point they become heterosexual.

I.e. a woman who was born female and is attracted to women (homosexual) but also born the incorrect gender for herself so she has surgery to become male, and is now heterosexual.

Remember though some people are bisexual, and you can have a woman who is heterosexual and comfortable in her birth sex marry a man who is heterosexual and was born the wrong sex who choose to stay together after the surgery. I don't know you would call that heterosexual woman homosexual now, she's probably bisexual, or even simply loved her husband, now wife so much that she decided what sex the person was didn't matter. I don't know how often this happens, but I know it does happen.
