Unfortunately (fortunately), it will be only a quick fad. As long as this country is fat, our beauty standards will remain thin. The more rare the trait (non-mutant trait), the more desirable and beautiful it is. It's a genetic attraction to diversifying our gene pool. Plus, we're naturally attracted to healthy-looking people. Hollywood didn't get uber-skinny until this country got uber-obese. Cause and effect. And X-tina, Britney, et al are not Hollywood, but likely a 5 year fad. Granted, I'd still do both of them. But they both were hotter when they were thinner.

Have you read "The Power Broker"? It's about Robert Moses who was a major force behind much of the bridge/highway/tunnel/park development in NY in the 30s 40s and 50s. Other people who know way more about NY can probably expand on that. I read it quite a while ago, but remember it being good. I think he's pretty controversial; not sure if the book was slanted one way or the other, or was attempting to be even-handed. It's from back in 1975 but it's history . . .

To the extent that I'd be forced to decide, because of the obvious space limitations, between that one and the ever-popular and equally-compelling nine-disc set of "Retrospective on Faucets", I would just rather forgo the dilemma. Too many choices just complicate things.

I was noticing that Duran Duran has not aged particularly well at all. Some men seem to just get better and better looking as they age (until they hit about 55, then it's over), but these guys look just kind of plasticky and bad.

I think Madonna looks pretty good for her age. When my husband first saw her Gap ad, said "God she looks old", but I disagree.

All I can say is thank god for Tivo. I was able to watch that thing in about 30 minutes. The face lick would have been hot if it had not looked so forced. No emotion, no hotness. And Christina can definitely out-sing Britney any day of the week. That baby voice of hers grates on my nerves.

It would almost have been watchable had the same 5 bands not been nominated for every freakin category. Let's see, Missy Elliot, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Beyonce and 50 cent.

Great performance by Mary J. Blige, and it looks like she's lost a lot of weight. Mostly showed in her face.

And Kelly Clarkson? REally? That was a good video? Hmm.

My over-arching VMA observation is that whoever directed it should be fired and killed to prevent him/her from ever working again. WELL before the Duran Duran sound problem, the s/o and I were making comments every 10 minutes about how terrible the sound was, both during the speeches and the performances. At the Duran Duran point, I said "this show doesn't deserve my audience," and I went to bed. You couldn't hear Redman during Dirrrty. Hell, you could barely hear Xtina.

BUT

The opening number was hot. Chris Rock was very funny, as usual. I particularly liked his: "we have to be real careful on the seating arrangements. Can't sit 50 cent anywhere near Ja Rule, can't sit Jay-Z and Nas together, and since the Olsen twins are down here, R. Kelly's gotta be way way up there." Even if he did double clutch on the joke, like he was considering not doing it.

Good Charlotte is a fraud, but from what I hear, the 12-14 y.o. girls love em. Personally, I think they're a poor man's Sum 41.

50 was good, but I'd rather have seen him do "If I Can't Do It" or "21 Questions," but then we wouldn't have gotten to see Snoop all decked out in his P.I.M.P. gear. And was that Don Bishop Magic Juan with him? Sweet.

WIthout the sound problems, I'd have given it an 8. As it was, a 2.

Ben Affleck Schadenfreude
 

I happened to catch Ben Affleck on the Late Show last night. Not sure if it was a repeat but it was recent since he was reading off a list of his "favorite" mean reviews of Gigli and talking about the stripper incident. Did anyone else see this? He was trying to laugh it off but he came off sounding incredibly defensive. He also made some really weak jokes about how Jenny won't let his friends in Bastahn throw him a real bachelor party as punishment for the strippers.

Also, I saw him throw out a pitch at a Red Sox game last Friday and there was a lot of grumbling in the crowd around me. Not exactly a warm reception from the "home town" crowd.

Pathetic-ist man alive.

Which is why I kept saying to myself last night "VIDEO music awards or video MUSIC awards? hmmmm." What is the fucking point? Obviously there is zero separation between the video and the song in terms of awards. Is it really possible or just a weird coincidence that the "best" videos always match up with top-10 songs? Come on already, there wasn't one nomination-worthy video with a crap (and by crap I mean not top-10 because we all know that there is a lot of actual crap at the top of the charts) song? And MTV doesn't even play videos anymore, right? At least they make them sing live so we can tell just how "produced" they really are.
