Not that this is determinative of anything -- but there was a high-school (vegan, PETA (?), god-knows-what-else) girl who worked in my barn who would only buy used boots/saddles/other extraneous tack items, because she didn't want to contribute to the ONGOING cruelty -- but what's done is done... (or some such reasoning.)

So, Ms. Silverstone has at least one comrade in "ideals".

I'm a former ovo-lacto-game meat veggie. THAT was a fun line to justify

BR("factory farming is unnecessarily cruel, but otherwise eating meat is fine")C

I think the "vintage OK" justification is somewhat like the "old ivory OK" thing.

Yeah, but that's still a blurry line. What's vintage. 100? 50? 45? 20? I mean really. Couldn't you just call anything formerly owned, vintage? It's still bullshit, and even moreso if Alicia Silverstone is claiming it to not be.

That said, I knew a PETA radical in law school, and she wouldn't even consider wearing vintage fur or leather on her dead body. It is all cruelty in the rules book.

In fact some idiot wore a full length fur coat to law school one day (yeah, totally appropriate) and we had to physically restrain PETA person from lunging at her jugular.

Vintage. HA. Nice try.
Agreed on the bullshit call. You either wear fur or you don't, it doesn't matter how "old" it is. I don't do fish/seafood, milk, eggs, meat or poultry and won't wear fur but I do own leather shoes and my car upholstry is leather. I think the fur thing has to do in part with (1) the animal being killed only for its hair as opposed to leather where we use the meat as well and (2) my mother told me never to wear plastic shoes. We all draw our lines. I have a strong dislike for over-the-top people who freak out and won't bathe or wear makeup because of animal parts "allegedly" in the products. I also do not like people who foist their views on others -- I feel a certain way about animals and their rights but I don't go bonkers on people who appear by their wardrobe or dinner plate not to agree with me. To each his own, none of my business, no skin off my ass, etc.

I respect this. Even back then, I said it was easier to see eating rotting flesh when you'd shot bambi yourself. Also justifiable from a feeding the world perspective, since that there factory farming is damn inefficient, while li'l bambi's just calories on the hoof looking for a predator to feed.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A newly expanded gay-themed high school began the school year Monday with about 100 students attending classes, about 200 supporters rallying outside and a small band of protesters demonstrating against it.

Since 1985, Harvey Milk High School has served students who are gay or believed to be gay, but its recent expansion to 100 students sparked criticism from conservative groups.

Application to the school is voluntary. Teens are admitted regardless of sexual orientation, but must show they are at risk of dropping out because of harassment.

I'm really not trying to Milk this for all it's worth, but couldn't they come up with a better name for the school*? Does anyone know the school mascot?

*No disrespect to the late Harvey Milk intended.

Why don't they ask 'em if they are gay and then we can categorize them as "gay" or "not gay" instead of falling back on "believed to be gay." :sarcastic

Let me get this straight -- if they are a contestant on boy meets boy and the leading man doesn't peg them for straight, they are believed to be gay and thus can attend Milk HS.

Any more questions on Alicia's logic?

Common misconception. Only bad leather is a byproduct of food-livestock. Most leather good enough for garment/glove/shoe making isn't, because animals have to be penned and cared for differently to produce a nice skin (again - factory farming for food isn't nice). Slaughterhouse leather usually ends up in saddles, soccer balls, workboots & stuff, or very cheap protective gear.

In a separate release, another team of student directors announced that the spring play would be "Twelve Hundred Angry Men," an adaptation of the famous courtroom drama.

Dear Shape Shifter,

This is not news. I refer you to the Stalin board, circa 2000. Still is damn funny shit though, so your ignorance is forgiven.
