A defendant can't use evidence of a victim's alleged threatening nature as a basis for a self-defense claim?

I'm no litigator (but I've played one on TV), but I think the lyrics can be offered not to prove the truth of the matter asserted (I'm actually packing a gun), but to give basis for the defendant's belief that he believed the other guy was armed. I'm sure some of our litigator friends can correct me or help here.
