Am I the only person on the planet who is made to puke by the very sight of Debra Messing? Until last night, I consoled myself with the thought that people are watching "Will & Grace" in spite of Messing, but clearly I'm in some kind of minority here. She approaches that role like she's in a dinner theater production of "Noises Off!" Here, have an Emmy.

In other news about cultural has-beens, critical reviews for the Woody flick are mixed, but the one clip they keep showing with Ricci and that "American Pie" dude involves the worst acting I've seen since Schwarzenegger's appearance on "Oprah." This is a terrible shame, because Ricci is kooky-hot and has nice gazoombas, and I haven't heard her talking about having sex since "The Opposite of Sex," and then I felt kinda weird because she was supposebly 16.

Survivor: Nicole appeared to be fine; Andrew, the appointed-leader of the tribe of idiots (this requires its own separate post when I have a moment about how the Morgan tribe had the worst collective performance of a tribe in any Survivor show ever) had convinced five other people, including Nicole, to get rid of Ryan, the young dorky guy, because he was bad at pushing the canon during the immunity competition. Then all of a sudden and for no reason, Nicole decides to start a campaign to vote off Tijuana, who was one of the six. Nicole apparently missed Reality TV 101 and also Not Being A Doofus 201, because she went from home-free to out-of-there in about 30 seconds of TV time.

BB4: I didn't watch Friday's show, which I think was a greatest hits show. But speaking of greatest hits, I have been watching the "100 Most Intense Degrassi Moments" specials on NOG, which includes "Old School" moments from the original Degrassi High show (haven't seen any Degrassi Junior High moments yet, but they showed the Zit Remedy video, and Joey and Caitlin's big breakup scene), as well as sneak previews of the new season. Fuckin' A. So yeah, BB4, I have no idea what tomorrow's show will bring, and I don't really care to see Ally beat Jun (prediction: Alison wins 4-3).

It was "Here, have an Emmy" all the way around. Everybody Loves Raymond? Yeah, in the way that even kidnap victims come to love their captors. That is the most depressing show I have ever seen, mostly because of Doris Roberts's portrayal of the mother in law from hell. Cheryl Hines wuz robbed. At least if Megan Mullaly had won the supporting actress award it would have gone to someone funny.

And the West Wing as best drama? I still watch this show, but not without nostalgia for its former glory. This past season, the only reason I watched was to see if Charlie was going to give Zoey's dissipated french boyfriend (who reminded me of "Woo-die, I am going to zteal your girlfriend!") the ass-kicking he so richly deserved. Alas, that did not happen, and now we have a constitutional question about which President Sheen would no doubt love to give his staff a Socratic quizzing were he not preoccupied with his daughter's disappearance. Meh.

There were some great music revelations, some great favorites, and some acts I never have to see again.

The Revelations:

First and foremost, Robert Randolph & the Family Band is absolutely incredible. He plays pedal steel guitar and the excitement and exuberance he brings to his performance was infectious. I will see him every single time he plays in Austin.

Second, Jack Johnson was as good as everyone said. As much as I wanted to dismiss him as a pretty boy beloved by co-eds, he was really good. This was his first show in Texas and he will be back.

Third, Los Lonely Boys rock the house. They put on a fantastic show: great songs, great performances.

Old Faithfuls:

Los Lobos is always terrific. Their Saturday set was excellent. They had a mini-encore that was also terrific.

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe is my favorite band to see live. They put on a great show, as always.

Charlie Hunter -- what can you say about a virtuoso who plays an 8 stringed instrument (top 5 are guitar, bottom 3 are bass)? He's just incredible. His trio was very tight.

Rebirth Brass Band has a great live show. It's just a party as long as they are playing.

Not Worth the Bother:

Spoon is an old Austin band. I recall a couple of you talking about them last week, so I went to remind myself why I don't like them. This is the basic reason: if I wanted to hear the Violent Femmes, I would listen to the Violent Femmes, not this warmed-over VF wanna-bes. We stayed about 45 seconds.

Polyphonic Spree was all bombast and Sgt. Pepper. We were all curious to hear them live since they've received a lot of press, but they were just awful.

Edited to add: we have the doors open at home and we are listening to REM play to close out the festival. They sound terrific, but we were too tired to stay.

As someone said regarding Robert Randolph: "Now I know what it was like to be at Woodstock and see Jimi play."

As someone said regarding Karl Densen's Tiny Universe: "How exactly could anyone think of something that cool?"

As someone said regarding Polyphonic Spree: "What is this shit?"

Highlight of show: Hundreds of people flipping off Polyphonic Spree because the noise was drowning out Jack Johnson's first song.

Lowlight of show: Realizing I need to burn all my music equipment because I don't have it and will never get it.

Of course it was. Can you believe how much mileage Mohr has gotten out of that? Everyone and their brother does Walken. But he does it with brilliant content, and that's the key. That's actually the key to any good impression; having something funny to say. I saw Mohr doing standup and he told a story about working on a movie with Walken, and Walken being stunned by a dog that was on the set, and the dog having no tail. "That dog . . . has no tail." I've never laughed so hard. He does his Walken on several different LA radio shows on a regular basis. He probably spends more time as Walken than has himself.
