False. Some of it came from Amazon reader reviews for In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How It Changed a Nation, a Language,and a Culture by Alister E. McGrath and Coined By God: Words and Phrases That First Appear in English Translations of the Bible by Stanley Malless and Jeffrey McQuain. It was only by running searches for "1 Maccabees 9:16" that I found the Christianity Today article, because all my favorite Bible sites are Protestant and don't have the deuterocanonical books, the fuckers.

BTW, I found a RealAudio link to the radio program mentioned above. It's with Alistair McGrath, the author of In the Beginning. It's available on the Wisconsin Public Radio website. He does a pretty good job of explaining the doctrinal reforms that followed direct Greek to English translation. The most famous example is the fact that metanoia in the Greek became paenitentia ("penance") in the Vulgate, but became "repentance" in Tyndale and the KJV. Huge doctrinal shift against priestly authority.

A personal note: The McGrath interview preceded by by an interview with Elaine Pagels, upon whom I have an enormous crush. I dream frequently about talking with her into the wee hours about early noncanonical Gnostic gospels over a bottle of red wine. Then we do the sex --- around the world. Usually on a macrame pillow.

I'm not saying you didn't have independent knowledge. Nor am I saying that such knowledge didn't inform your Google search. After all, you can't do a really effective search unless you know something about the subject matter you're Googling.

I'm just saying that the Christianity Today article that you acknowledge finding includes not only all of the items cited in your post (in the same order), but also a number of other interesting tidbits. Why make your FB friends work to turf up this stuff? Sources of erudition should be shared, not hoarded. :)

(In case you're interested, I found the site by typing in the first half of the last sentence in your post (having to do with the "left wynge" business), which included the "Maccabees 9:16: reference you used in your search. It was the only website that came up. As for the other sites you cited, show me any information set and I can show you several sites that collectively contain the entire disclosure.)

I hestitate to mention this, but....if you have a bunch of "favorite bible sites" bookmarked, you might want to get out a little more. NTTAWWT.

Another interesting linguistic tidbit: apparently the word baguette is a corruption of the French word for the Biblical "begat", and was so named because of its shape.

I have it on good authority that Gibson Dunn DC is looking for junior to midlevel lateral associates to work on litigation matters. I don't work there, so don't ask me for details. Maybe they'll even give you some if you're nice.

Hmmmm. I thought it came from New Orleans Saints fans putting bags on their heads and hooking up in the stands, while their team took it in the ass on the field. The association with "French Quarter loaves" came later, after enterprising stadium vendors began selling trusty (and crusty) stand-ins for alcohol-induced impotence.
