ETA: 2-300k in my neighborhood doesn't get you jack, and I live in a small house. My wife and I are rich when you compare us with Cletus the dirt farmer in North dakota, or an inner city crack dealer, but we're very, very fucking middle class. I think upper class starts around $500k. That's about where you can start acting a fool with the checkbook.

ETA3: Maybe that was high - $525 might put you in not-giving-a-shit land. Problem is, to get that money, you have to spend a lot of money. Private day school alone is $25k around here.

Yes, and this makes me very concerned about how people who are making $40,000 are even living. Maybe they live in different neighborhoods in your overall metropolitan area? Because I don't think the bus drivers and waitresses and staff at your law firm and tellers at the bank and even lower-level loan officers at the bank and myriad other people are even cracking $100k in the Philly metro area. And they are getting by somehow.

Oh, actually, out in the burb area is where all the businesses who got tired of frivolous suits, high taxes and unions ran. The people working in the industrial parks abutting my town have very nice lives.

You can't get near a good legal gig outside of town. People line up in droves to take pay cuts to work at satellites out there because once you get yourself wired in the suburban business communities, you're a prime player. Working in the City here looks lucrative, but its just short term hazardous duty pay.

Un UPPER mid level in this town pulls down on average $135k. Some of the biggest firms in town have moved to shitty office space to save money.

And its only getting worse by the second. Getting off the train is a soul-crushing event. The only thing worse is contributing to the problems. At least I don't have an option, and I'm just biding time... If I were a lifer, I'd be hard pressed not to jump in front of that train.

I'd feel sorry for this town, but its getting everything it deserves.

I think I will count only the street I live on, and only the part I drive on my way home from work. I'm in the bottom quartile, easily. Especially if I get to count guests at Le Hermitage (I probably spelled that wrong because I'm a prole). Though, there may be some proles blowing all their cash on a vacation there, so maybe I don't want to include them.

If you use the rule that you can mortgage 2 and 1/2 times your income, I think $600k per year gets you a second bedroom.

ETA: You realize I was talking income, not home prices. In my humble area, 2-300k wouldn't buy you anything. 600K would get you a solid middle class home. To have a place with a little land, $1 mil. To live fat, $1.5. I shudder to think what I'd need to spend to have what I have in SF. That town is frightening in re real estate.
