Agreed. Submitting things with typos might be the stupidest move ever. It ain't the typo that sinks your ass - its the fact that you didn't even bother to fix it. As long as its not on the signature pages, you can ALWAYS fix it. There's just no excuse for fucking up twice on the same doc.

Don't use phrases like "To wit" or any other 18th century-sounding constructions. "Heretofore, thereinafter" and other grammatical Frankensteins should also be removed. A few years back the fed Ct issued an advisory telling people to write as simply and concisely as possible.

Submit something written like PLF's prose.

I have briefs, memos, complaints, etc. My best writing is probably in the memos though (like Bilmore said, you don't have to follow such a strict format with the memos).

I really don't know if I'm a good writer or not. Don't take what I write here as an example. I'm much more immature re: law-related stuff...


One supervisor loves what I write; the other edits so much that I can't recognize it, although he apparently does this to everyone.

If you're in litigation, submit something that you did enough work on to be on the signature line, and that bears a close resemblance to the work you actually did. Since it's a matter of public record (assuming it's not under seal), you don't even have to redact it. If you've never been primarily responsible for a pleading, I would submit a redacted draft that reflects your work.

My old firm read writing samples when they were requested. They were looking for the ability to make a reasoned argument and something that approximated Bluebooking. Typo graphic errors are bad, but if you'd submitted something that had been publicly filed and it happened to have a typo in it, it would likely have been overlooked.

On the transactional side, it's a bit harder. Redacted memo might work.

And every place I've ever worked since starting law school has checked at least one reference each time.

I understaned whyyou moved but cant remember how it was that you got the chance. My point was that Coltrane may have a negative in his resume by only have two years or whatever at htis work place. Not a negative for his career so much as for his desirabilty to potential employers.

of course, it depends on twhether he has an area of expertise or is some fungible ligtigator type who learend everything he needws to know in Civ Pro.

I know. I feel just awful. About as awful as when I convinced First Crush's Older Brother ("FCOB") to glue a red barn and farm animals to the roof of his car and FCOB drove around with it up there for like a week before he tore it down upon realizing that even such an extreme act of devotion on his part was not going to get my 14-year-old ass into his 21-year-old bed.
