What about Kerrey's awful joke about marrying up? Yuck.

He lost points on that one. I also thought Bush had a good answer on the personal faith question, and there was really little Kerry could say after that. But the key issues they were talking about - jobs, healthcare, education and the economy, Kerry scored and built his credibility.

I don't think joking about Teresa's money is going to help him. I think it rings a bit too true.

(1) Who fucking cares about Teresa? If you really want to make anyone think you're female, give it a rest.

(2) I agree with bilmore. It was effectively self-effacing.

Coming next: Matter and Antimatter!

Now with Larry King on CNN: Ann Coulter and Jesse Jackson.

eta: In my defense, the remote control is broken.

I like that everyone liked the Theresa joke, but, hey, it was hardly a critical point of the debate.

It looks like most of the polls that poll everyone are calling it a draw, maybe a slight edge to Kerry - which means that Kerry supporters liked Kerry, Bush supporters liked Bush. The CBS poll, which focuses only on undecideds, gives a solid Kerry win.

Everyone is saying its boring. OK, I thought it was a bit repetitive, but boring?

The ABC poll had 8 percent more Republicans, and gave Kerry a 1 percent advantage. So that's good for Kerry. But the polls are missing the point, I think. Kerry is trying win over swing voters, and Bush is trying to mobilize his base. The polls are a pretty lousy way to tell whether Bush's strategery is working -- it all depends on how likely voters are to turn out, and none of the pollster really tell how they're figuring that out.

edited to fix "CBS" to "ABC" -- t.s.

The commentator asked GWB and JFK about the strong women they were both married to and asked them to comment. Kerrey stated that they both had married up in life and some would say that he had married up more so than others. I just thought it was tacky.

What woman knows this much about tanks? And BTW, men don't fucking care (your words) about the first ladies. But women do. We even critique the way they dress when amongst ourselves. But you wouldn't get that.

That is because you are thinking about it from a man's perspective. You are only thinking about how it reflects on him. I would cringe if I had more money than my husband and he made a joke like that. Part of the joke is that he married her for her money. While a man might not mind if his wife teased about marrying him for his money (because men are unfortunately valued in this society by how much wealth they amass), a woman would mind if her husband teased about that.

etft -- t.s.

Question for SocSec experts:

Conventional wisdom (which is about the sum of my SS knowledge) holds that SS is rapidly going bankrupt, in dire straits, etc.

Kevin Drum keeps saying it's actually in fine shape and just needs a little tweaking.

I just figured, she's there, she's rich, everybody knows about her, so there's no downside with that joke, and it came off well.
