How do you solve a problem like Maria, indeed.

And clean and bright--because he was Austrian, not Italian.

RT--I went to Salzburg for the first time with a college choir and we took great pleasure in recreating every scene we could from tSoM, including "Give me the gun, Rolf" in the cemetery, and the kids climbing the trees in their hideous curtain clothing. In the Austrian countryside we made our bus driver stop at a promising-looking field and had our Maria (who was definitely not as cute as Gwink) run out across the field so we could film her coming back over the rise. Apparently during filming of the movie, it was not spring, because our poor Maria came back with huge blocks of mud attached to her shoes.

Further a propos of RT's brother--during the World Cup in 1994, when I was living in NYC, we used to play a game called "Gay or Italian?". A group of four or five guys, short hair, well-scented, pants worn a little high--we'd guess which category they fit before hearing them talk. I suppose it's possible that some groups were both.

Did you go to the ice caves? I voted for them, but we ended up going to the salt mine, which completely sucked.

One of my aunts told me about doing something similar, but it was just her and her sister. She said it was great fun, and it's been on my list of things to do before I die since she told me about it.

My parents and my sister stayed at the von Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont when she was in college, and she and my mom spun around on the mountain field for awhile singing while my dad pretended not to know them. Good times.

I really need to look at that list and revise and/or check off where appropriate. It's been probably a decade.
