I would think he would need to work for at least a year or so before going into office.

I think Wanker referenced a former governor of VA who went to a BIGVA firm after he was governor, and ncs has discussed Ron Kirk, and I think Kay Bailey Hutchison's husband was a politician for a long time (how they met) and then went to BIGTEX, but I don't know whether he was at a firm before he went into politics or was at one at all while in politics.

ETA I think you steered him right, but wtf do I know? Unless he is part of a famous political family, it's kind of a stretch to assume that he will be successful and influential enough in politics to get a job at a prominent firm.

Speaking of Kors, do you think Alison's greater sin was that she could not make the fat model look thin, or that she is cuter than the judges?

Well, he's not going to run for office in the last three years before partnership, right?

But you know as well as anyone that associates can slack off and do anything for a couple of years at a law firm if they don't really care about partnership. That seems like a feasible approach. Work hard for two years, coast for three years while hobnobing with the relevant party.

(I'm told on good information that Alex Kozinski got his judgeship pretty much that way; Covington and Burling wasn't particularly impressed with his billables his last couple of years, but they knew better than to bitch to the Reagan white house.)

Maybe the better answer is that it's not common, and em should think hard about how the BIGLAW career is supposed to set up the political career.

Not to be a pedant or anything, but I recently read somewhere that this business of emphasizing words with additional periods is all. played. out.

N.B. -- Even more played out is stringing a bunch of the periods together, I hear.

Thompson was the former US Attorney in Chicago before becoming Governor of Illinois. He became a partner at Winsotn & Strawn after leaving office.

Ty Fahner was State's Attorney and also in the US Attorney's office. I believe he's at Mayer Brown now.

Really?!?

How about a high end development like the luxury townhomes at LightHouse Bay in South Amboy, New Jersey? In addition to luxuriousness, as I understand it, it is conveniently located to Manhattan, with the nearby hi-speed ferry direct to lower Manahattan, in addition to fast, dependable light rail service.

Although good luck getting an affourdable price. I know that some of the luxury townhome units at the Lighthouse in South Amboy have appreciated up to 20% since March...

About the same time that ppnyc came back on the boards, a friend of mine got a letter from the wife of her ex-boyfriend. The letter was a reply to a letter my friend had sent her ex- a year previously. My friend's letter was a lament that things had not worked out between her and her ex, but that she wished him happiness with his new wife and the baby on the way.

The new wife felt it was necessary--a year later--to return the letter and to remind my friend that she (the wife) had won and my friend had lost. She flaunted the baby, and the marriage, and the man. She said that the pretty girls always win, and that my friend should lose weight if she ever wanted to find a man. She mocked and belittled and degraded my friend's previous love for her ex-, and she was mean and cruel and lording about it.

The same day my friend posted the letter, the same day I volunteered to beat the shit out of this horrible woman on my friend's behalf, I checked in here and found ppnyc was mocking RB for being fat and barely for being unmarried and dismissing the notion that she was immune from divorce, pain or heartache.

I decided that day that I really didn't want to come back here and be subjected to the crap that my friend, RB, barley, gwinky, the other FBetties and the poor female attorneys that work with ppnyc are subjected to. I decided to stay on hiatus for a few more weeks. I was planning on staying for a few more, but Sebby's obstinance on the PB sucked me back in.

ETA:

But my friend is an awesome woman, and so is RB and so is barely and so is gwinky and so are all the other FB Betties. And so am I. So fuck you if you think that my marital status is a mark against me. Fuck you if you think my childlessness makes me less of a woman. Fuck you if your inferiority complex about being "just" a paralegal makes you think that you have to find something that you're better at than us.

I have never seen GWNC, so I will have trust the word of those that have. I do remember she once reported chipped or cracked fingernails. Maybe that sort of lack of attention to cuticles flows from having to go out clubbing instead of having a supportive husband to come home to, allowing the time to properly manicure?
