My favorite part of The Corproation was the scene where the protesters go to the President of Shell Oil's house to make a scene and he invites them all to have tea and air their grievances and offer real, practicle solutions to whatever ailed them. The looks of befuddlement were awesome.

Dean's Comments

To All:

1. Please explain how equating "staff" jobs with minorities is not stereotyping based on race? You may want to provide a cite for your contention that truth is a defense.

2. Assuming that your response in #1 continues to defend the comments, please explain what your response would have been had Dean been the chair of the GOP, rather than the DNP.

You have 30 minutes. Good luck.

No fair. The movie I gave you to watch was much longer than 30 minutes. I even allowed for time to rent from netflix or blockbuster or wherever you get movies from.

"Compared with all U.S. workers, hotel workers are younger, more likely to be female and foreign-born, less likely to be white and likely to have less formal education . . . . Hotel workers are more likely to be black, more likely to be Hispanic and more likely to be of other races (including Asian and Native American) than U.S. workers as a whole. " There are all sorts of handy charts and graphs on the topic if you care to keep reading.

If Dean was the chair of the GOP, I would think he's an idiot. And not just because of his party affiliation. If the chair of the GOP had made the comment, it wouldn't have made any sense because the Democratic party is more racially diverse than the GOP.

Answering you a little more seriously, your question isn't reflecting the true nature of his statement. You have to look at the entire statement as a whole. He's not saying that minorities only serve in the capacity of "staff." He's saying that the only minorities that generally are let into GOP events like the one he was speaking at are the people that they pay to be there in a service capacity. (CF. Wonkette's challenge during the GOP convention to try and find ANY person of color attending the events. I think the Daily Show had a similar montage of people of color cleaning up after the RNC. It's an old joke.)

It was an insult to Republicans, not people of color. You should be sputtering in outrage on behalf of yourself, not on behalf of me and my service industry working relatives.

I suppose then that it's also racist to suggest that blacks used to be slaves? After all, many blacks weren't slaves, and many slaves weren't black. Stereotyping!

Dean's point was, the Dem tent is more mixed than is ours. He was right.

If you go into a Republican rally of the same sort, to the extent that you do see blacks and hispanics, chances are high that they are working for the facility, and not attendees. That's what he commented on - "look at how diverse our membership is compared to theirs."

As for cites - simply look to the percentage of R's who are black, hispanic, or whatever, compared to the same stat for Dems. Additionally, look to any grouping of low-paying jobs - they will disproportionately be held by minorities. I was at a CLE a few weeks ago. Almost all white lawyers, almost all black waiters. It's not racist to acknowledge that. It's racist for the Dems to treat that part of their constituency as one fungible bloc, of course, and I think that's how our tent is eventually going to grow, but what he commented upon is simply a measure of foul truth.

What if Dean was an R? Had Dean been the chair of the Republicans, then he would have been lying.

Doesn't it sort of prove that the Dems aren't really helping minorities that this might be true 40 years into the Great Society?

What, did you think we couldn't google?

Even with your recast of the issue (cf. RT, supra), you might be able to argue blacks are not terribly disproportionate among Hotel workers in general, because hotel managers (a fairly large portion of the overall hotel workforce) are overwhelming white. But that would sorty of make the point for us, wouldn't it?

And if the RNC head said Dems couldn't fill a room with black supporters, I'd say he was a moron engaging in yet more conservative wish-think. But, given what we here you guys argue here, I'd say we just might hear it sometime.

you're also ignoring the principle of taxing consumption rather than income.
Everybody should ignore the principle of taxing consumption rather than income. Consumption taxes are not merely regressive, for people living on a subsistence level, they are confiscatory.

Doesn't the accuracy of the remark sort of prove that the GOPers are helping minorities less?

I see you found all of those consumption-tax models that include food, rent, and meds.

(Where were they? I missed them all.)

You fail. From the cite you posted:
  • Compared to U.S. workers overall, hotel workers are younger, have less formal education, are more likely to be women, are more likely to be immigrants, and are less likely to be white. In 2000, about 21.8 percent of hotel workers were under age 25, 24 percent did not have a high school diploma, 57.9 percent were women, 28.4 percent were immigrants and 45.6 percent were non-white.
