You damn Yankees are all alike. You simply don't understand the God-fearing patriots of te south. We live in the tradition of Jefferson, where the government that rules least rules best. Now, we do help out the occassional farmer, particularly family farmers of good stock, and we do have a long traditional of military service, and nothin's wrong with servin your country, now, son, is it? We just don't see why the brave boys in the military ought to be forced to spend time on bases where it might snow or have other un-Godly weather, when here in the South our weather is always perfect.

But the government that rules least does indeed rule best. We don't need no government telling us how to treat our black folk. Well, we may think it's alright now for government to provide jobs to a few good ole boys down at the courthouse, and there's nothing wrong with having the A-tomic people over at Oak Ridge, because we may need that to blow up those Russians, or whoever it is we're against now, and the boys in Huntsville and Houston of course need a few space programs, but you're not against knowledge and learning about outer space, now, are you, you Godless communist. Just as long as the government doesn't encourage any interracial dating, and as long as we hire enough boys for the border patrol. Oh, and we can't let those abortionists get away with murder so a few government folks prosecuting such things - but you're not in favor of murder, now, are you boy?

Who said anything about skills? I'm sure the man is highly talented. It's just refreshing to see someone take the road less traveled by to get to that sort of important government post.

I agree with that statement, but not the conclusions you draw from it.

The increases are almost all in defense and homeland security (and the tax cuts). While we can (and have) debate the wisdom of that, it's not really a pork-barrel expansion, but a belief that we need to spend more in those areas.

If I thought you were correct that those areas are the source of the increased spending, I would tend to agree. But what about the new drug benefit? That was a handout to pharma.

When you say shit like this is really evidences you lack of understanding of how government works. The head of FEMA doesn't actually plug gaps in levees, he makes sure people who can do the work are in place. It is no different than most presidential appointments.

I knew actual high appointments during Clinton's term in my area of law. They weren't well-qualified- shit one was not even minimally qualified. Presidential appointments are a favor repaid.
