Pisses me off, too - regardless of what one thinks of the admin's escapades, the troops should have fucking socks and toothpaste. But then, my impression is that the supply chain never works quite right, and the black market for a lot of that stuff in the ME would probably be pretty huge.

One question though - when it says "no adult content" for reading material, can I safely assume that they use MPAA standards of "adult"? I can send my copy of "Hannibal" and Stephen King short stories, but not my copy of the bodice ripper "The Brazen Countess"? Or by adult do they really mean Penthouse? ETA: per the "horror comics" specification - is it really the pictures they are worried about?

My b-i-l, who just got back, said they generally were pretty well supplied over there, and that he got lots of reading done. On the other hand, he is the kind of person who is pretty content with a fairly spartan existence. The thing he wanted most was more phone and internet time to communicate with the family, but they keep that very regimented. Cell phones aren't permitted; telephone calls limited to specific times (very short) and places; and all internet activity very heavily screened (often things like photos of the kids were blocked).

The one thing that drove him completely lunatic was the lack of medical supplies, and the number of times they had to turn away locals coming for very basic help that he could have easily given them, knowing all the while that their problems would be quite severe or even fatal without the help. Policy is to provide no medical assistance to a local unless the injury was caused by us, so as to preserve medical supplies in case the troops need them. He is much more adamant about what the Iraqis need than what the troops need.

Of course he didn't. As bilmore has demonstrated, Bush is genetically incapable of lying, as is everyone else in his administration. They promised to restore dignity and integrity to the White House, and lying, misleading, omission and obfuscation simply have no place.

Letterman had a clip from a speech Bush gave in Orlando recently. In it, you see Bush droning on and on, while behind him a small boy is seen fidgeting, looking at his watch, yawning, and eventually falling asleep. (The boy was 12, and according to his father, up late.) It was a funny bit. So funny that CNN ran the clip in its entirety, but added that the White House had told them that the clip was made with the "editing magic" so often used by Letterman. Later, another CNN anchor ran the clip, but said the White House had told them that the kid was at the speech, but not on the stage or right behind Bush where the Letterman clip showed him. Letterman was annoyed, and claimed that both White House statements were 100% flat out lies. Then a representative from CNN calls Letterman's producers and claims that no, no, the White House didn't tell them any of those things, they were wrong. Letterman feels bad for accusing the White House, but insists the tape is accurate. Now Letterman's producers have discovered that yes, the White House, or someone acting at their behest did in fact contact CNN. And CNN again "misspoke" when they said they hadn't been contacted.
