Doomed to spinsterhood

I think it might depend on income and culture, too. Friends from India describe child rearing as a sort of fun thing one does with other adults, especially other Moms and elderly men and women in the family -- all of them helping each other and being able to get away a lot by taking turns. Then again, they're wealthy and live in a fancy compound. Anyhow the point is that the degradation might be alleviated if we weren't so nuclear family-ish and secluded.
(And I know of a few cases where the career thing has been such a disaster that changing shitty diapers and having to entertain a 1 year old for 12 hours was considered "relief.")
