No. It's just that we've all been busy burning down buildings and attacking anyone associated with the Internet, responsible for publishing ads for Baby Jesus Butt Plugs

(and the book which inspired the Plug). We're late to the game, having just realized (to our suprise) that the morality of our actions could be construed as "open to debate".

I guess I don't understand the point of continuing to post the cartoon. If lots and lots of people are offending by it, why? It's not like it's particularly interesting or artistic.

Ahem. Some people didn't think the statue of Mary (or was it a cross, whatever) stuck in a glass or urine was artistic either. That photo continued to be shown at exhibits even though many were offended by it, and as well, many didn't think it was "particularly interesting or artistic".

I think your comment here demonstrates why we rarely agree on anything. This controversy has demonstrated to me why I could never be a responsible editor of a newspaper, magazine or head of news network. I would post this everywhere (just like those European magazines) to show that there is free speech in this country that can't be cowed by fanatics of any stripe. Clearly this would not be in the shareholders interest but I wouldn't be able to help myself. I think those other magazines and newspapers that published the cartoon to show solidarity with the newspaper in Denmark did a very honorable and courageous thing. I applaud it 100%.

Their laws against blasphemy don't apply here or anywhere else in the west and they need to get used to it.

I think it is a lot more than "fanatics" who disagree with our "free speech" concept? Seems to me plenty of fanatics and non-fanatics don't want free speech in their own countries OR in anyone else's. I haven't heard many Muslims chatting about cultural relativism and how not to view the world from a Muslim/Sharia, etc. perspective.

I don't understand this. Why would someone think you are killing boards? Don't you contribute to the death of a board by not contributing to it?

As I understand the protesters, many of them are protesting because the cartoons are offensive to them. I'm all for free speech, but having the right to free speech does not mean you have an obligation to offend.

You "understand the protesters", eh? Because "protesters" include sovereign nations that have taken official action against the governments of Denmark et. al because the governments didn't intervene in the private business of the newspapers. The Danish government has explained "freedom of expression is a matter for the courts, not for the Government.” Muslim nations which have taken official action vehemently disagree and are taking official government action - they're not picketing the offices of the newspapers.

And what is this "I'm all for free speech" but only if it doesn't mean you have an obligation to "offend"? WTF? If we were under obligations to offend (or anything else) in print, then how is that Free Speech? You're either for Free Speech, or against it, ESPECIALLY when the speech takes place in one's own country (i.e., it's not like the Danes dropped off Westerners in Muslim nations telling them to go and distribute the cartoons). I'm for free speech. People in other countires (or my own) can insult my core beliefs, religion, etc. and I would never try to chill that stuff (and certainly wouldn't kill over it). So which is it? Are you with us or not?

This isn't a serious post is it? You are kidding right? You can't really mean this? You understand that they are protesting the fact that the government has not censored these papers. That the governments of these contries have not supressed these images. Why do you think they are burning the Danish embassies and banning Danish goods?

If they were just protesting the images they would not be blaming Denmark and would only be blaming the paper or papers.

I have posted too much outable shit on this sinkhole and I don't want to get targeted by these crazy as fuck extremists so I created a sock for this post.

What's fucking amazing is that so much of the US press has taken on a pass on showing the pictures. Isn't great Tyrone that they are able to balance the values of free speech with self-censorship and deference to extreme hate groups.

Hey CBS, CNN, NBC et al. at this point the substance of the pictures is relevant to what the fuck is going on.

I wonder if the American and western press who are showing so much respect for the tenets of Islam, will show the same deference to other religions who may find offense in certain images? If you don't remember the ubiquitous showings of the Piss Christ in the mainstream media back in the day, take a look at my avatar. Remember when Matt Lauer did an up close and personal viewing of the Dung Virgin Mary on the Today Show.

Ah yes, but that is just those pesky Christians who were peeved. No bother. That's just a wild and crazy cult.
