The distribution of heights is likely closer to normal than the distribution of weights, which likely have a long tail to the morbidly obese numbers. (i.e., the mean would be higher than the median.)

That said, I wonder how much height/weight averages have changed with each generation. It seems to me at least that Americans as a group are getting taller with each successive generation. Do you have any data on that?

Upwards, definitely upwards.

From the underlying data, it appears to be the mean. Median would appear to be in the mid 140s for everyone except blacks, which is 161.

Edited to add: the 5'9" for men shocks me, too. But they do definitely grow them bigger in flyover land. I'm not sure why they wouldnt' grow women bigger, too, though.

There's so much potential for clashing with the plastic clips, though. Ugh.

Friend of mine called me this morning to tell me his gf had broken up with him.

The woman in question took him home from the doctor after a, shall we say not nice test men sometimes have to have, which required him to be given some heavy pain killers, so he is pretty out of it.

She left him at his home, and then, apparently, called his cell phone, and left him a message dumping him.

Can you imagine? Who in the hell does something like that?

Isn't a lot of that likely explained by the ethnic/national extraction of the population in various places? As well as the recentness of their immigration from countries in which nutrition is likely not to be as good? Since I don't want to generalize like Paigow, I won't be more specific, but I have observed that person of some ethnic backgrounds tend, on average, to be shorter than others. If the short ones all end up in NYC (or "the NYC"), there's one explanation.
