I love Bob Marley, but I'm not sure he and The Wailers were a "rock band". And Pink Floyd was fun in high school, but didn't make it past my freshman year of college.

Edited to add that I would have put the Allman Brothers on this list.

No Motown, no girl groups, no rap or hip-hop, no group from the 50s, and punk is represented by the Ramones (I like the Ramones, but come on).

If we want the most influential, these aren't them. If you want the greatest musicians, these aren't them. If you want the one's this guy listened to in college, well, now, we understand.

The title is "best rock bands," not "most influential bands" or "best musicians" or even "best bands." By definition you can't include hip-hop or Motown. The author admits that the list is "purely subjective."

This morning I was flipping channels while getting ready for work and caught the following exchange between Regis and Kelly:


This happened about 4 minutes into the show. It's all I saw (because I hate that show), so I can't give you any context, except that Kelly was very tan and Regis appeared to have a glass of chocolate milk on the table in front of him. But it was freaky.

Oh, I can go better than that - I picked up a (really quite nice) antique - price, $9.99. S/H, $185, actual shipping cost: $35. Karma gets those guys sometimes, though - the only negative or neutral feedback my seller had ever gotten was from buyers who didn't realize the game and complained about "good prices but S&H was unreasonable."

But I digress. Back to movies. I must disagree with Fugee about "Kissing Jessica Stein." I'm not sure that it belongs on a list of movies that deserve more love (was it on the list? I guess I should have checked before I posted) in that it was pretty much slobbered over by critics. But I found it pretty amusing and an interesting character study. I don't think that it was meant to be all that realistic about lesbians, by the way, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, my two cents. A day late and a dollar short. Which makes it, what, like I get 98 cents back? Whoa (in a keanu-like way).

A list without Nirvana is a list written by a baby boomer.

If it's a list of rock bands, I can see leaving out Chuck Berry and girl groups, but I agree that this is a list of the bands the author played on his college stereo.

And if we're going to include The Velvet Underground solely for their influence, we have to include either The Pixies, Sonic Youth, or Husker Du. You can make a bold list by choosing The Pixies, leaving off Nirvana and daring people to challenge you. You'd still be wrong, but not as wrong as if you picked Pink Floyd over The Who. You need The Who to ensure The Ramones and the The Jam exist.

How late to the party am I re: this show? They had a Significant Others marathon last night. Apparently it premiered March 8th? Anyway, it's fucking hilarious. One of the husbands described the vagina as a "melted candle with hair on it." Good times.

All true. But Bob Marley should not be on that list (I mean no disrespect, just that reggae is not a sub-genre of rock).

Personally I've always thought that the Grateful Dead was only the most overrated band, but I know legions of tie-dyed patchouli heads would disagree. Ah, well.

I would probably put the Jimi Hendrix Experience in there, with the caveat that I don't know how you deal with personnel changes. I would take Pink Floyd off (I mean, c'mon), and put in The Who.

And I would move Led Zeppelin to Number 2.

The girl group debate I myself would have would be the Ronettes, based on influence, style, and top hits, and Patti Labelle, based on longevity, versatility, and sheer vocal gutsiness (kind of like the Stones, who were one of a number of damn good bands back in the day, but make it on to almost all the top 10 lists based solely on the fact that they kept making music 20 years after their peers stopped, some of it pretty good). I can see the pros and cons of including girl groups, but I think they did a lot for vocals in rock music, and we're back in a world today where the vocals matter.

But "best" has to have some meaning, and listing what he played in college just means these are his favorite bands, nothing more.

I wouldn't include any girl groups (different genre), but an argument could be made for The Pretenders. Or, in a similar vien (but minus the chicka), The Kinks. I don't think either got honorable mention, but I'm too lazy to check.
