Kerik and Rudy were Republicans in name only. At the local level, patrticularly in the Northeast, you want to be a Democrat. But guess wht? Sometimes the Democrats already have their chosen candidates, so in order to get elected, you have to become a Republican.

There is no difference between a Democrat and a Republican in local races, so when you write a post like this, you sound like some DailyKos poster who's too limited to understand the situation.

Power corrupts. The Rs, for one reason or another, have had power long enough that the rot is pretty malodorous.

Am I more worried by Rudy's bad judgment in selecting a police commissioner or his current embrace of Pat Robertson and friends? Definitely the latter.

Up here, I didn't get to see Rudy operate on a day to day basis, but I did get to see Mitt Romney, who has the same disease. So is pro-choice Mitt or pro-life Mitt the real Mitt? It sounds like you take comfort in the idea that the Rudys and Mitts of the world are lying now and the "real" Rudy and Mitt were the Governors.

It's silly to suggest that Kerik's problems reflect poorly on Republicans generally. OTOH, the man was almost Bush's choice to be Secretary for Homeland Security, on Giuliani's recommendation. He reflects poorly on Giuliani's judgment about whom he surrounds himself with, and to a lesser extent the same is true with Bush.

I have no doubt there are many honest Republicans who are not sexual deviants. I do not think Bush, for example, is either a crook or a deviant, though I certaintly have plenty of doubts about his competance and judgment. And I believe McCain learned his lessons in the Keating 5 scandal and so I would trust the guy today.

But I keep seeing a lot of trees and am just wondering out loud how many trees are needed to make a forest. Until we figure that out, no harm in continuing to point out the trees. A lot of them seem to have interesting, twisted shapes.

Citing one party as more or less natively corrupt than another is ludicrous. But you do have a point that either party, given enough time in power, will become obscenely corrupt. And the GOP is that today. But as you said, that's a symptom of time and arrogance, not a native inclination. And that's a distinction missing in your first post. Perhaps it was implied and I missed it.

It may be a function of such decisions as politicizing the AG's office, so AGs were chasing Dems but not Rs. If you keep the watchdog muzzled, sooner or later the neighborhood burglers are going to figure out that he can't bark or bite.

It may be a function of the holier-than-thou attitude of the Christian right and the Rove/Cheney faction.

It may be a function of the last Congressional leadership - after all, if you put guys like DeLay in charge, it's hard to tell the rank and file to behave. The jackel isn't going to get the wolves to leave the sheep alone.

For whatever reason, there are a lot of trees, and until someone realizes they have a problem and do a bit of housecleaning, the little buggers will just keep sprouting. (Have I mangled enough metaphors this post?)
