But according to The Dowd Report he bet on the Reds to win every game that they played (almost, during the time period that was documented, Dowd found only one occasion where the Reds played but Rose chose not to place a wager on the game)... if wanting the team you manage to win every game it plays is bad and self-interested then every manager (well, hopefully all of them) is guilty of that.

I also seem to recall that his gambling wasn't entirely profitable -- in other words, the guy made some shit bets a lot of the time.

Punish a piss-poor gambler who bet on his own team to win every night and lost his fucking shirt? Rose may be a moron at times, but I don't think he ever intended to tarnish the "golden" image of baseball (Hi Darryl Strawberry!!) and they should let him in because his stats bear it out.

p.s. I think "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was railroaded....that poor illiterate fuck. He played that Series to win (look at the stats). Just because he knew about the fix should not have set him up for an eternity in banned from baseball hell.

So he didn't bet against them... That's only one part of the issue. He put himself in a bad situation ripe for extortion.

Say his bookie is mob-connected (or the people he reports to are) and say the Reds aren't doing so hot and Pete's into them for, say a couple hundred grand and is having trouble paying...

What's to stop those guys from saying to Pete that he has two choices: 1) Do what you can to tank some games for the Reds (put in bad lineups, leave pitchers out too long or on short rest, etc., granted it's not foolproof but he can influence the outcome) or 2) We put you in the hospital or where no one will ever find you...

While he apparently never got in that situation, he shouldn't have allowed himself to be ANYWHERE CLOSE to that situation. That threatens the integrity of the game. That's the point.
