That reminds me of something I was going to bitch about a few weeks ago.

Harvard gave Bill Gates an honorary doctorate at the graduation ceremonies. All of the articles went on to describe how he dropped out of Harvard in his junior year to go start Microsoft.

I think it would have been much cooler if Harvard had given him academic credit for, er, taking over the world, and given him his actual degree instead of some fluffy piece of paper that means absolutely nothing.

Wait, so they would give him some fluffy piece of paper that purports to mean something, yet still means absolutely nothing?

Why not just ask him for a handsome donation to the university in exchange for academic credit?

Well, of course he'd have to pay tuition! 30 years, plus interest...

[1] And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
[2] And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
[3] And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
[4] And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
[5] And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
[6] And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
[7] And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
[8] And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
[9] And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
[10] And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
[11] And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
[12] And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
[13] And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
[14] And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
[15] And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
[16] And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
[17] For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Funny -- I don't recall that man in the picture with Hussein being the President of the United States. What year was that? I also don't remember any U.S. President describing Hussein as "exemplifying the finest aspects of humanity in achieving liberty and justice". It's a common response on this board when you expose some foolish- ass thing done by someone who happens to be a democrat. They rush to find a Republican who's done something bad. As if it somehow makes it okay for Jimmy Carter to act dumb ass because a former Secretary of State who's Republican shook a commie's hand once. And the old "post pics of exec. branch w/ enemies" game.

Ricks

For fans of WaPo and Fiasco, Thomas Ricks had an interview yesterday on Fresh Air which was pretty good, and covered a wide variety of stuff, including the surge. Stuff that I did not know, but know now, included the following:

* Even if the order were given tomorrow to evacuate entirely and immediately, it would take 12-18 months to get everyone and everything out. We have a massive, massive amount of equipment and materiel in Iraq, and basically one road back to Kuwait. Even if we ran 30 convoys a day every day, each with 100 or so trucks, it would take 10 months to get it all out.

* The military is planning to try and push congress and the administration away from the current, simplistic, and false dichotomy of Stay Indefinitely at Full Strength, or Leave Entirely, because it's a bullshit argument. Neither are practical, real-world solutions, because with the former, we simply can't stay at current levels beyond March or so without breaking the Army, and for the latter, if we completely leave the bloodbath will be just that. So, in September, don't look for a thumbs-up or thumbs down from the military's report. Instead, look for the military to press decisionmakers to think about what they really want the next steps to be.

I hadn't heard of this before. While the incidents allegedly happened in the 70s, they do not appear to have been made public until shortly after Carter wrote a book critical of Israeli policy, 30 years later. Sounds suspicious.

Oh, please. Carter can be an idiot (which is why he was an awful president), but he is not the only one who has said stupid things about horrible people. I am sure that Nixon and Kissinger slobbered all over the bloody hands of Mao and Chou* during the toasts while visiting China. Ronald Reagan praised all sorts of thugs during the Cold War -- and paid a "heal the wounds" visit to a cemetary in Germany that (whoops!) had a section for the SS. GHWB praised Ferdinand Marcos for his committment to democracy when he was veep.

And as for the Jewish problem, every new release from the tapes shows Richard Nixon wins the prize among recent presidents for that one, closely followed by GHWB, whose secretary of state once said "fuck the Jews -- they don't vote for us."

*Yes, yes -- speaking of mass killers, FDR had nice things to say about good old Uncle Joe, too.
