I've said all along that I didn't think we should have gone in, but having dome so, we couldn't pull out without leaving some kind of lasting order. At one point I hoped we could plan a staged pullout over the course of a few years. Subsequent events have led me to change my mind on that score.

However, you are either missing or ignoring my main point. Far more important than being in Iraq is a presence in Israel, Lebanon, and Syria.

While I didn't follow the Israeli statements closely, I doubt that they were promising a quick, complete, and transformative victory.

And their reasons for not carrying out a massive ground war -- to avoid tens of thousands of dead civilians -- strike me as better than Rummy's reason for not putting in enough troops ("There's no need! we will be greeted as liberators!")

Why, why do you feel the need to give the enemy any greater rights than they give us? Did the people in the WTC get open hearings before they were executed? A last meal?

Why do you want to give these radical Islamists anymore? If President Gore had handed over the keys to bin Laden do you think the al Qaeda secret police would have given you due process when they knocked on your front door?

It certainly re-inforces my contingency plan to shoot first and answer questions later if and when the government comes knocking at my door.
