True. I bought a bunch of stuff there, and pretty much just stayed in the dressing room while someone brought in lots and lots of stuff. I regret a couple/few things, but I also got things I never would have picked on my own that I really like.

really? they had a good-ish selection of petite stuff, including RL, at the one here.

So? You can wear them for six months and return them no questions asked for a refund.* Teach them to provide good service that makes you buy things you don't like.

* True story, if my friend is to be believed: She returned one shoe for a full refund on the pair.

(Not that Ann Taylor clothes look like summer associate clothes, but that they were the clothes that she bought before being a summer associate. And now that I think about it, I shopped there quite a bit for first year associate suits, all of which have now left my closet.)

I have some work pants from Ann Taylor and I must be the person they design them for because those are among my more comfortable and better fitting work pants. I do agree that the store tends too far towards synthectic fibers, though having a bit of stretch in some of the work pants is nice. And recall that I also have been known to buy Gap work pants, so most likely my standards cannot be trusted.

The only department store I go into regularly at this point is Nordstrom and really that is only because I have one across the street from my apartment. It is almost always disappointing too because it was a test store that was made significantly smaller than most Nordstroms and so selection in all areas (including, alas, shoes) is limited*. After they opened that store, I have heard that the response was not good and they bagged the idea of smaller Nordstrom stores in the future. Lucky me.

*Though now that I think about it, the men's department does tend to have good items and the men's shoe department is almost as big as women's so maybe this was some mastermind plot by a man to limit the women's stuff while getting full selection for himself. Evil genius.
Thank you, ncs. Every time I find myself really struggling with my Manfred Pledge, I just think to myself "ncs will address this in just a few short moments and I will feel better".

I think AT clothes are very young lawyer starting out. perhaps because of the pricing? kinda upscale, but not superexpensive.

Maybe it's an aberration just in the petite departments - which is the only place I can shop at either place. Or anywhere for that matter. But I gave up on Ann Taylor a long time ago. I found some cute khakis at least at Talbots Petite. That fit me like they were made for me.
See, I find the same phenomenon at Talbot's. The waist/body is always tremendously too-big. Too boxy for my taste/shape, which requires some difference in waist and ass measurements. And the pants are too damned short. I have had some luck going down a size or two and doing Misses rather than Petites.

I do have some pants from eons ago from Ann Taylor that I still wear and that have held up pretty well.

I have lately discovered that, for inexpensive suits, Anne Klein fits me well these days. I wore a tailored shirt yesterday that I really want to have copied by a tailor.

Anne Klein is very nice work stuff.

Don't forget Brooks Brothers. I am head to toe today stuffy as hell but nicely cut and good lightweight italian wool. A ton of my crap is from BB.

I think we are kind of saying the same thing.

When I was a 2L, interviewing, I had a rotation of maybe 4 AT suits. I added a couple more when I was actually a summer associate. By the time I became an actual associate, "business casual" was the norm, so those AT suits got relegated to the back of the closet where they still linger, reminding me of that particular autumn and the subsequent summer.

That is all I am saying. I was in no way commenting on the cut, design, price point, or anything else about AT suits.

eta that when I was a summer associate, I did not take my pants off (Ann Taylor or otherwise) and throw them into the Boston Harbor. I did, however, set a trashcan on fire in a partner's office. I also got my partner mentor so drunk that I had to hold her hair back while she puked.

This is a sort of disturbing line of thought for those of us who were just at the kids board.

Back in the day, Nordstroms would employ a separate buying department for every store. That way, they could buy appropriately per market. (Hi Blake!) Like, you wouldn't want a lot of deep winter outerwear in the LA store, for instance. But I had heard that over the years, they were doing away with that practice, because it was too expensive. I have been to 3 separate Nordstroms in the past 3 months (in 2 states) and can say with confidence that Ralph was not among the brands in any of the petite department. They had full size Ralph in other departments. The one by my house had Ann Klein for awhile, but a very limited selection.

I shop only in Faconnable, Savvy, St. John and Studio 121 now.

Maybe I should go to LA.
