I'm not defending the man, I'm saying that if he had been replaced by someone of normal or exceptional competence, that person would have gotten many more people out of New Orleans, but that many more people still would have opted to stay. It is my belief that most of the people who stayed did so because they opted to ride out the storm, not because they lacked a ride, notwithstanding that a significant number of people lacked a ride. That's all.

Have you picked up a paper since the Hurricane?

I have read the San Francisco Chronicle every day, and do not recall seeing any such picture. I just re-reviewed the front section of today's Chron, and it contains no such photo. I do not read the Mercury -- sorry.

Always a good rule of thumb, and in this case having the added benefit of being correct!

FWIW, the Chronicle (the web site is called "sfgate") doesn't show any articles or pictures if I search various forms of bus, buses, school bus, etc. with New Orleans. I can't get access to the Mercury on-line. I had never seen the pictures in many hours of television viewing.

A broader search found the story reported by the Socialist Worker, the Cuban press, and a few clearly conservative blogs. I understand why you couldn't produce the cite now. I'd been wondering why no one just posted a cite.

So Nagin's incompetance cost lives. Why does it matter how many lives? Wouldn't have one life been enough? Why can't you just acknowledge that you now have strong evidence that Nagin screwed up? Why do you have to throw in that many people would have chosen to stay. We all know that, but that in no way mitigates the screw up which your phrase seemed to imply (along with not having a direct criticism of Nagin).

Let's get this straight, the answer is no. The parodies are obvious for what they are, on top of which, many come from parody sites such as strangecosmos.com and sacredcowburgers.com. The logos of such parody sites are right on the pictures.

for Ty or Gatti (or even ncs, but less so her, and not because I once crushed her, but more because she does not have the history with the PB that the other two do) to claim that the parodies influenced their ability to judge the others for what they were or to claim that I have ever made a "serious" comment that was a blatant lie and attempted to use a doctored photo to bolster that lie is incredibly disengenuous and both of them should apologize to the board for their jackassinine behaviour.

What does this mean? Are you questioning the veracity of the story? The pics? Are deep is the liberal denial?

Because I adhere to my zero-tolerance policy of ignoring images posted by Penske on this board. I just can't afford to encourage him. Think of the children. And because my brief web-searching not too long ago turned up zero stories explaining why all those buses could have been left to sit there, and I got distracted by something else. Still waiting for one of you well-read types to post something about it here. Pointing me to the SF Chronicle didn't help, since I seemed to get a mutant copy from which all such pictures had been mysteriously excised.

It means that Spanky may have been mistaken when he declared that the Signature Photo of the Hurricane was "in every major local newspaper for days." The man literally "could not get away from that picture," as "it was lead on every local channel."

Nice try, but your attempt to drag his point back to some false debate over whether the pictures were real or not. Is anyone else here sensing a pattern?

I hate to do this to you, but I just got off the phone with one of the editors of the San Francisco Chronicle and he told me they did report about the buses and that they cited many examples of Nagins mistakes and screwups (if you email me I will send you his name and title). He can't remember if they actually printed that same photograph. In addition, he said that Nagin has been pointing his finger at everyone and only a blind man could not see that this guy has royall screwed up (if you have read his paper).

I know it was on the cover of the San Jose Mercury News. If it wasn't the chronicle it was the Palo Alto dailey because I saw it on the front page of at least two papers in the bins.

I still stand by that statement. It was everywhere. It was discussed in editorials etc. But the point is moot because Penske talked about it on this board, so we know Ty was aware of it.
