I like how the Sudanese government has been "unable" to find even 1 person to prosecute for the genocide in Darfur going on now for 4 years, but in 2 days it charged, prosecuted and sentenced the Teddy Bear lady. I have to wonder about the thousands of Sudanese Arabs crying out for the execution of the lady with the Teddy Bear:

Can someone find a pic of Arab protesters objecting to the slaughter of those they refer to as “slaves”? No, I didn't think so. BTW, nobody knows if there is oil in Sudan so why is it exactly that we are giving aid to a government that is clearly protecting the slaughterers? Because China and Sudan are trading buddies and we don't want to piss of China? Really, I'd love to know. If someone could explain, without use of the bullshit word "stablize" or any variation of it, I'm all ears.

I'm reading a book about Bombay right now, and it touches on the riots in 1992-93 in which Hindus killed a bunch of Moslems. It's not like Islam is the only religion which can be used to whip a bunch of poor people into a frenzy so that they won't notice that their government isn't doing anything for them. At least no one in Khartoum was burning their neighbors alive, as happened in Bombay. This time, anyway.

Are those the riots where the Hindus stopped a train and set it on fire? I read a horrific story about some action of that sort, but I'm struggling to place the time of the event.

Anyway, I of course agree, Islam is not alone in creating violence. And I thought the goat wedding showed its seldom seen tolerant side.

This was followed by the 12 March 1993 Bombay Bombings, allegedly orchestrated by ganglord Dawood Ibrahim and his D-Company syndicate, in which 250 people died.
  
  The riots started as a result of communal tension prevailing in the city after the Babri Mosque demolition on 6 December 1992. It is commonly believed that the riots occurred in two phases. The book I'm reading (Maximum City -- it's excellent) has a number of stories that are just awful. People who described to the author pouring gasoline on their neighbors and burning them alive in the street. The book also makes it clear that these aren't necessarily devout Hindus, and that they were whipped up by politicians. So I'm just thinking that whoever got the Sudanese going about the teddy bear probably had their own agenda, and that it doesn't necessarily have much to do with religion.

eta: In contradistinction to the Wikipedia entry, the author (a Hindu) says that the Bombay riots were whipped up by the Sena party, which was allied with the BJP, and that Moslems were generally the victims -- no suprise, as they are the minority in Bombay. It would appear that whoever wrote the above was trying to make it sound even-handed.

I think all of the instances are deplorable. We are how many years from the dark ages? Religion does not get a pass here. It's the instrument of manipulation, as culpable as the people who use it for these ends.
