I don't see Bruce as blue collar. Shit, he wrote about LBI, which ain't cheap stomping grounds (even in the 70s). The misinterpreted point I made was that his characters were too regional and time specific for him to ever reach the leval of Dylan, Dead, Doors, Sinatra, Cash, etc... Johnny Cash was the supposed epitome of blue collar music, yet his characters appealed across the board, to everybody. Bruce doesn't fail because his characters are stuck in the Mill, or spreading tar on a road crew. Bruce fails in my book because his characters are stuck in Central to Southern Jersey in the 70s. People were enamored with that scene back in the 70s, but not any more. Bruce is a solid rock star who had the good fortune to burst onto the scene while there were no good rock albums being made. But of course the man is insanely talented. Shit, he must connect with somebody. But for a music snob like me, he's just not cutting it. Close, but not quite there. He can arguably hang with Bobby, but doesn't belong in the same hotel with Jerry. And he's not qualified to shine Cash's boots. |
