I used to be a big fan of Suibi on 53rd but I haven't eaten there in about 5 years. Best sushi in town, bar none, is the unassuming Sushi Yasuda on 44th (?) - but don't go unless you're on an expense account. Sushi Samba is nothing more than a pick-up bar. Actually - to be accurate - TWO pick-up bars. not7yS |

actor: catherine keener. makes consistently superb acting choices and acts excellently in them. john goodman. deserved the oscar for walter sobchek in the Big El Music- black crowes. i never hear them get their due. also, Juice Newton who was a great balladeer in her day. movie- big lebowski. a nonsensical plot does not take away from the greatness of this film. living in oblivion- greatest movie about movie making, ever. bet you never saw it. tv show- Are You Hot? Lorenzo lamas dressed like a golden retreiver talking about the combo platter in his pants while a gay clothing designer made men turn around to show off their asses. hilarious. I will never understand why this was not a ratings smash. |

Underrated list
Good call, Jack.
1. Food: Beef. Whether we are talking about the simple joy of a cheeseburger at the local joint, or the pricey joy of a filet at the Palm, beef is good. Oh, sure, I like chicken, and there are health issues with too much red meat, but there's a reason that my ancestors were forced to eat potatoes so that Baron Whatshisname could eat beef. It tastes good. 2. Actor: Bogart. The guy could play the romantic lead, the bad guy, the tough good guy, and the cynic with the heart of gold. Don't believe me? Don't even bother with Casablanca (which I love) -- watch the Maltese Falcon, Sabrina, the African Queen, Key Largo, and the Treasure of Sierra Madre. 3. Band/Singer: Jimmy Buffett is regarded as a lightweight party type music guy (Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?) with a fan base of goofy corporate drones escaping their pitiful lives for a day at his shows by wearing loud tropical shirts and drinking too much Corona. But people often overlook his serious stuff -- A Pirate Looks at 40, Come Monday, and songs like that. 4. Law firm: None that would mean anything to any non Podunkvillian. 5. Occupation: I'll echo the person who picked day care. Oh, and teachers. 6. Movie: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Perhaps John Wayne's best acting, James Stewart givng a great performance as a "hero" wrestling with himself, and an ambiguous message. Yet the consensus is that Shane is *the* great western. Granted, the ending of Shane ("Shane! Come back, Shane!") is moving, but what about hearing "that's the man who shot Liberty Valence" as we see Stewart sigh? Perfection. 7. Song: I'll catch some flack for this, I am sure, but I just listened to the Jagged Little Pill CD, and You Oughta Know still sounds great to me. Angry Chick music arrived on mainstream radio thanks to that song. Great lines, too -- "are you thinking of me while you fuck her?" and "you told me you'd hold me until we died, but you're still alive!" Alanis may not know irony, but who cares? 8. TV Show: Sports Night. I still can't believe that Sorkin's second best show survived and this one didn't. ABC sucks. 9. Article of clothing: The ascot, of course. Along with the smoking jacket. 10. Sexual position or activity: They're all good. |

let me recommend Sushi Groove in SoMa in SF. On Lester's recommendation, I tried the "foie gras sushi" - which was nothing more than a big hunk of foie gras over sushi rice. Possibly the best damn thing [food wise] I've ever eaten. not7y(love the foie gras...and pass the veal)S |
