So the parent that had custody was in Cuba, yes? And custody automatically reverted to the father in Cuba? So however clear it was that the mom wanted the kid to be in Florida, when she died, he went into the custody of the dad in Cuba.
Not necessarily. You ignore the equal concerns of the state of returning a child to an unsafe environment, to wit, a oppressive, violent political regime.

But Clinton didn't care about Elian - or his Republican-voting Miami based, Cuban exile family - so we all know how that argument went.

So you're not always Dressed the Same, man.

(I didn't really understand your question.)

Don't we send refugees back to Cuba all the time? Like, daily? Or do we give them all asylum?

I will bundle up, bilmore.

Spanky, on this board, we talk about politics, not sex. So suck my left one.

I hate to say it, but, they can suggest, and they can request, and they can even beg, but it's gonna be the "best interests" test no matter what. They might get a presumption that their choice is a sort of a prima facia showing of what's in the kid's best interest, but someone can still overcome that showing.
As I worded it above (see post #4730 above). Damn, maybe I should have been a family law attorney. I sure as hell wouldn't be sitting here drafting this damn agreement if I had taken that route.*

*No need to point out that I might be sitting somewhere else drafting someone's will or divorce decree right now. Let me have my little fantasy world here.

Nightmare, more like.

Treasure your noncompetes. No one tries to shoot you for them.

There are different boards for different subjects. That I understand. But what is the purpose of the threads? Is each Thread supposed to be a different political subject. If so what is the subject of this Thread? Grinches and Prostitutes?

What brought that on? When did I talk about sex?

Politics usually just has the one main thread. Other boards, like the fashion board, may have special-interest threads so that topics that bore others to death can still be done.

Some people use this software to have different threads on different topics. I think we have generally found that it works better to have one thread going at a time, on all different topics. That way, when you're getting beaten up, it's easier to change the subject.

On the state boards and most other boards, posters can start threads in order to limit the conversation to a particular topic (though things might go off course from there, of course). On Politics and Fashion, there are only active threads started by Admins or Mods because those boards get so many hits and posts that having many different threads open at once would be confusing and hard to keep track of. So there is no particular topic for this thread, beyond politics generally (though discussions of family law by posters who are procrastinating finishing documents are not prohibited).

If this Thread was started by SlaveNoMore why is it moderated by Tyrone and Penske?

Penske and I are moderators for all threads. It gives us some responsibility to tell trolls to take it elsewhere, and we can edit other people's posts, something we tend to do very rarely, and not for substantive reasons. (Send me a PM and I'll tell you why I became a mod.)

We start a new thread every 5000 posts, because when we didn't, the collective mass of bilmore's posts caused an implosion that deleted the threat and my primary sock. I was cranky for a week. By tradition, chasing a "K" (the 1000th post, and multiples thereof) is something of a feather in one's cap, and so the 5000th poster is entitled to be the one to start the next thread.

Got it

I have been accused of being a Troll and a Sock. I assume that a sock is when a veteran is pretending to be someone new and a Troll is someone obnoxious that needs to be prevented from further posting. Did I get that right?

Yes. And "mods" are simply trolls' socks.

There will be a quiz later . . .
