Sort of but not really. It does not take into account how efficiently the gas is used. Different engines put out a different amount of exhaust per gallon.
Yes, but the gas tax is not a bad estimator and is a hell of a lot cheaper to administer than having individual pollution-measuring doohickies on everyone's exhaust pipes, and making sure that people actually keep those on there. Having things super-exact is administratively super-expensive.

Transaction costs, bucko. You have to address transaction costs in your bright ideas. This isn't econ class where we get to start out saying "assuming no transaction costs."

While I realize it would be financially advantageous to you personally, I don't advocate a tax on fucking to replace the current income tax system.

And with that, all transactional lawyers breathe a sigh of relief.

I'm a walking fucking transaction cost. But not a walking, fucking transaction cost, so don't bother calling me (again!) when you're drunk at 4:00 a.m., SS.

Really? I can't believe that. There just aren't that many hybrids on the road, even in the crunchy area I live, and while they get better mileage, they still burn gas.
Studies have shown clearly that the CAFE standards, which raise average gas mileage, have had almost no effect on gasoline consumption. People drive by the total cost of driving--that is, because they need to spend less on fuel, they drive more. So hybrid drivers, predictably, will simply drive more than they otherwise would.

guess it's been covered, but there are pollution costs and road depreciation costs associated with driving--it's approrpiate to charge for both, if the transaction costs don't make doing so prohibitive.

I will go along with that as long as we tax those stupid Harleys 10 dollars a mile for all the noize they make.
Why not just enforce the noise laws?

Seriously, why aren't they enforced? Cops don't have the nads to mess with the Angels?

I asked this of some cops that were moonlighting as guards at one of my functions. They told me most cops either own or would like to won a Harley. Both the cops I talked to had Harleys.

I'm not really knowlegeable about Harleys, but surely they don't come factory-equipped without better sound control.

Of course, the cops may be eager to pop off the breakout panel on the muffler just as much as the other guy.

BTW, by "functions" do you mean porn-video filming events? Or rap-star parties? Because either way, you ought to join us on the FB and regale us with stories far better than Str8's.

I just don't see how you could study that. The amount that I drive is dictated, foremost, by the locations of my family's housing, work and school. Cheap gas might prompt me to move farther out, but how would you design a study to control for that? The sort of sprawl surrounding most American cities has continued to grow in recent years.

At any rate, I was advocating taxing gasoline, not raising the CAFE standards.

Do your clients know you continue to bill while in the can? You do realize those files are technically their property, right?
