Q for Yankee fans
Quote:
The "rivalry" between Jets and Giants and Knicks and Nets dos not seem to be that severe, though. When it comes to hockey, that's a different story. |

-That our fans know not to get up in the middle of an at bat. -That our closer throws harder than yours. -That our players sign autographs w/o a check for 3 grand (bye Piazza, homo). -That our pitchers bat. |

Fundamental Differences
Mets and Yankees fans are cut from different clothes. For Mets fans, 1969 is the defining moment. The Amazins. From the cellar to the penant. Lots of 1-0 wins, scrappy plays, unlikely heros. Don Quixote. They are the heirs of the Dodgers and the Giants, the team from the outer boroughs, the guys who try harder.
For Yankees fans, it's the murderer's row of the 20s that is the defining moment. The house that Ruth built. There's a sense of entitlement - the team that has dominated the most important city in the world for a century. It's a team of cocky arrogance. Self-assurance. Wealth. Grandeur. So, in general, the Yankees are giants and the Mets giant killers. No one ever cheers on the other team - it's against their grain for the Mets and beneath their dignity (or whatever you call it) for the Yankees. The funny thing is, this year's Mets team looks more like a lot of Yankees teams, just younger. |
