However, the other night we were served wine with a screw cap. It is apparently the new thing - it preserves the wine better than cork. Or so the waiter at Applebees said.
There are some non-crappy wines with screw tops now. This one, for example.

I've heard that the industry is trying to change the image of screw tops because of problems with wine that's "corked." See this, e.g. Unclear how Applebees fits into those machinations.

Given enough time and alcohol.
Get one of these.

It seems like a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a corkscrew, but it really works.

That's Sal to you.

And you were "handing out condoms" like Kevin Spacey was "walking his dog" and like George Michael was "visiting the tinkletorium."

Oddly, in my experience, it does not work so well for the non-cork corks. It does work extremely well on corks.

Quite the conundrum.

I was given one of these as a gift. I think it's a little cumbersome and awkward. And the screw kept getting bent on the aluminum. I recommend this.

Don't you know anything? Applebees controls all machinations. Where have you been?

Actually, my friend who writes for Wine Spectator (not ncs's guy, because she is a she) says that the screw top is the way of the future for the finest wines. I went to a wine tasting with her and many of the most expensive wines there were screw top. She is a good friend to have, free-wine-wise.

I thought you just sucked the cork out.

That's a standard wedding present from me.

While I'm here, I wanna pimp the Spanish Crianza, Condesa de Leganza. A really good red wine that's been selling around here for less than $6 a bottle. It started at Whole Foods, and then the word got out and Specs started selling it, and now the liquor stores can barely keep it on the shelves. An excellent, inexpensive wine.

I have the Bolex version of this. It does work well on cork. I can't seem to open my Franzia with it though.

Here's one that's a little less expensive, and absolutely foolproof (and I should know). Weekend houseguests gave one to us as a gift (after they lounged naked all over our furniture). It works wonderfully, and is pretty cool-looking too.

Kick-ass Corkscrew

And a picture (although I can never quite get this to work):

See? Why, oh why, won't it work? Who can tell me? Who, Bilmore?

Yes I've used friends' version of that and I have almost purchased the C&B version of that several times (walked through the store with it and then put it down at the last minute). I think I'll stick with my foolproof make-someone-else-open-the-wine-bottle method for now. After all, at some point they'll all be screw caps anyway. gwinky, please send me your friend's coordinates so I can let her know I've been spreading the screw cap word. Amen, sister.

I have a metrokane rabbit (no, not that rabbit). Works great. I haven't had any problems with real v. artificial corks. YMMV.

Ok. Put your cursor over the picture. Right click. Select "properties." Copy the address into your clipboard. Start your post. Click the IMG button. Paste the address from your clipboard. Complete post. Hit "preview reply" to see if it worked. (Some sites, like IMDB, won't let you do this.) If it worked, click on "submit reply."

And then you, amiga, are in like Flynn.

(I almost called you "amigo." Sorry.)

I see you got the photo from bizrate.com. You were correct to hit "properties" for the corkscrew photo. But you have to click the thumbnail of the photo (makes it bigger and stands alone as the only thing on the page) and THEN copy the properties. Which would have produced:
http://store1.yimg.com/I/designstore_1783_9772482

(What you did was run your cursor over the THUMBNAIL of the photo and hit properties, which gave you that gobbledygook formatting thing).

Ahhhh. You are wise in the ways of the Shao Lin, master. I fear I may never take the grasshopper from your hand.

(I also feel I must repeat, that is one kick-ass corkscrew!)
