I've heard that the industry is trying to change the image of screw tops because of problems with wine that's "corked." See this, e.g. Unclear how Applebees fits into those machinations.

Oddly, in my experience, it does not work so well for the non-cork corks. It does work extremely well on corks.

I was given one of these as a gift. I think it's a little cumbersome and awkward. And the screw kept getting bent on the aluminum. I recommend this.

Actually, my friend who writes for Wine Spectator (not ncs's guy, because she is a she) says that the screw top is the way of the future for the finest wines. I went to a wine tasting with her and many of the most expensive wines there were screw top. She is a good friend to have, free-wine-wise.

That's a standard wedding present from me.

While I'm here, I wanna pimp the Spanish Crianza, Condesa de Leganza. A really good red wine that's been selling around here for less than $6 a bottle. It started at Whole Foods, and then the word got out and Specs started selling it, and now the liquor stores can barely keep it on the shelves. An excellent, inexpensive wine.

I have the Bolex version of this. It does work well on cork. I can't seem to open my Franzia with it though.

Here's one that's a little less expensive, and absolutely foolproof (and I should know). Weekend houseguests gave one to us as a gift (after they lounged naked all over our furniture). It works wonderfully, and is pretty cool-looking too.

Yes I've used friends' version of that and I have almost purchased the C&B version of that several times (walked through the store with it and then put it down at the last minute). I think I'll stick with my foolproof make-someone-else-open-the-wine-bottle method for now. After all, at some point they'll all be screw caps anyway. gwinky, please send me your friend's coordinates so I can let her know I've been spreading the screw cap word. Amen, sister.

I have a metrokane rabbit (no, not that rabbit). Works great. I haven't had any problems with real v. artificial corks. YMMV.

I see you got the photo from bizrate.com. You were correct to hit "properties" for the corkscrew photo. But you have to click the thumbnail of the photo (makes it bigger and stands alone as the only thing on the page) and THEN copy the properties. Which would have produced:

(What you did was run your cursor over the THUMBNAIL of the photo and hit properties, which gave you that gobbledygook formatting thing).
