Are those the good colleges?

My thought is that tech support people insist on PCs for job security purposes. At my firm, they told me "You cannot network a mac" as a reason I can't use my macbook pro on the firm network.

It used to be all Mac, when apple had the education market locked up. Then people realized they could use their dad's old work computer, including software, or that they could buy a cheap PC for less than a mac, or that they wanted to use what they would be stuck using once they graduated.

When I was in college one guy in the dorm had a PC. He was considered a total oddball. Everyone else had macs (granted, SE/30s and such, at the time, although it was a PC/AT)

Really? When I was in college, everyone had PCs. Of course I was also surrounded by engineering majors and the like that wanted to be able to get inside their machines and tinker.

For home stuff, there is no comparison. Mac is perfect w/o the daily crash and burn you get from PCS. Intuitive, self-contained programs carefully mated to the hardware and operating system. Plus the freedom from spyware and viruses is a big plus. For music and movies, the mac is head and shoulders above the PC. Freedom from the constant futzing that plagued me when I worked on a PC is what I love the best.

For 90% of the stuff as I do as a lawyer, briefs, documents, pdfs, transcripts, the mac is fine. There's the occasional proprietary database that's problematic but that's about it.

Same batteries as a bunch of laptops. They don't catch fire because no one can keep 'em running long enough that they overheat.

True. I only shut my mac down when I am traveling with it. This one has been running w/o a glitch since March 15. The PC has been rebooted about 70 times since then.

In fact, each time it boots up, it's like that rickety old car starting up. I keep wondering if this could be the day we head down to the apple store for the mac mini of her choice.

When I was at Chapman, we had macs. I generally liked a lot of things about the macs, like not having to worry about viruses. But there were a lot of things that were problematic. If you double-clicked on a button, or if you tried to cancel an operation, the mac would lock up. And, unlike a pc, where you can always do the control/alt/delete thing, when a mac freezes up, you're fucked. You can't even just hit the power switch and fire the mac up again because the switches are all software based rather than purely mechanical.

When macs work, they're great. When they don't, they're impossible to futz around with and get going again.

I may give the new macbook a chance one of these days for home, but I'll never trust one for work again.

Force quit is new with OS X. OS 9 and earlier did have those problems, but (a) there were workarounds (but not well known ones) and (b) all macs have always had physical power switches.

Then explain to me how it is that I had numerous occasions when the only way to kill the beast was to unplug the power cord and pull the battery, please.
