Short answer: buy a Mac.

I think they fall into the inattentive category. If memory serves, the kids are supposed to be in bed while the parents host a party.

Opie seemed to turn out okay, too.

Also, note the total uselessness of the fathers in many stories. Cinderella's father is blind to the mistreatment of his beloved daughter by his horrible second wife; Nemo's father is an anxiety-addled twit; the kids who grow up in those books in Minnesota (I can never remember the name of the series) have a dad who is always away on business; Jane and Elizabeth's father, Mr. Bennet, is as ineffectual as they come (luckily, Elizabeth manages to marry someone quite unlike papa; although Lydia ended up with a cad and Jane, a gay). Perhaps some authors are working out their issues with daddy?

Indeed.

But Nemo's dad is a hero, too. C'mon -- give the guy some props. He crossed an ocean and took on 3 sharks to save his son. (And you'd be anxious too if you'd watched a barracuda eat your wife.)

If what I think is going to happen actually happens, I think you're going to hell, too. (I was going to post something about Opie, but then thought better of it.)

weren't they just sent off to the country during war?

[spoiler?]

And then they all get killed in a train wreck, along with their parents, later on

Same sort of thing happens in Labyrinth (one of my favorite kids movies of all time): she's supposed to be baby sitting her brother and wishes him away.

BTW, I tried that trick. Didn't work.

We had Norton Internet Security and it is a memory hog and the machine used to take forever to start up. For our new machine, we got Microsoft One Care (or whatever it's called) and with that you get a license for 3 machines. I have been so far impressed and my IT manager geek friend says it's the only Microsoft product worth owning.

I recently read L'il Ty one of his children's books about a family of foxes and three farmers trying to kill them. It was creepy.

I was thinking about reading him Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but he's not all that tuned into candy and I'm worried about calling it to his attention and glorifying it. Probably this is silly.

Am now reading him a book called The Tale Of Despereaux. Recommended. Despereaux is a mouse who has parents, but they stand uselessly by when the head mice send him to the dungeon for talking to humans.

eta: The Dalh was The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I like Roald Dahl [as in Sophie's Dad] and I like James and the Giant Peach. As of late we have been reading something like Punk Rock Farm. funny stuff.

AoN does anyone like the Edward Gorey drawings? with the little heads of the shrunken variety? I love those.
