The omissions of A Clockwork Orange, Reservoir Dogs, and Blue Velvet eviscerate any credibility the list might have had.

Shawshank is not a cult movie. Tons of people have seen it. Plus, it was nominated for 7 Oscars. It's on the wrong list.

I doubt any of these are on the list, but here goes:

The Woman Chaser: stars Patrick Warbutton (Puddy from Seinfeld) as a used car salesman in 1950's Los Angeles who decides to write and direct his own movie. Shot in color, but transferred to black-and-white. I've seen it on cable in color, but on screen in black-and-white is better. It's hilarious either way, in an over-the-top pulpy style. This (unrealeased) soundtrack is stacked with lounge classics.

Bound: after reading a bunch of articles about The Matrix, I was surprised to learn that Bound was a flop at the box office. It's a wonderful film. They even manage to make Jennifer Tilly not seem annoying.

Rushmore: this was the best work that Bill Murray has ever done. He should have won best supporting actor, and he didn't even get nominated.

As for cult films, rather than defining by example, how about the following:

A cult film:
1) Did not enjoy great critical acclaim or box-office success,
2) was not widely seen, and
3) has a sizable number of people who both love the film and are willing to see it repeatedly.

BTW, I think Reservoir Dogs absolutely qualifies as a cult movie, and is one of the best. My friends and I comprise cults for certain movies, such as "Night of the Creeps" (giant slugs that enter people's bodies through the mouth and lay eggs in the brain, turning them into zombies) and "Legend of the Overfiend" (the longest Japanese anime psuedo-god-demonic-porno in the world, with at least five distinct points at which you're CERTAIN that the movie HAS to be over . . . "

Well, it certainly makes it difficult. With Jenifer Tilly, her shrill, squeaky voice has always irritated me. In Bound, she basically whispers/purrs during the entire film. Probem solved. By contrast, Fran Drescher in a lesbian scene is still annoying.

I think that's a good working definition, but I think a film that had critical acclaim but was either rejected by the mainstream or couldn't get into enough theatres to have mainstream success should still be able to wear the cult classic mantle, provided that (3) is satisfied.

that might be a decent revision, but I nonetheless note that probably 90% of the cult films mentioned today were not critically acclaimed, despite their respective cults believing they were the "best movie ever."
