Nothing big - mainly because (a) I've been spending my free time trying to learn the ins and outs of this Board's code, (b) I've haven't had much to add to the conversation - although at some point I guess I should lob out there that I definitely dig Kim Carlson, and (c) I'm sick as a dog, yet again.

I had a long post to Bilmore discussing the tendency of bebop artists to quote melodies from other songs in their solos, to quote each others solos in their solos, about how popular riffs from solos ended up being melodies to entirely new songs which had the same chord structure as the underlying tune (and which became standards in their own right), and in which the soloist would often quote the underlying tune in his solo as an inside reference to those in the know. It was a masterpiece of a post, but the computer ate it.

That's so true. I was listening to my Justin Timberlake CD this week, and damn, I'm not sure, but I think it sounds a lot like NYSYNC's second album, with a little Michael Jackson from the 80's and early Backstreet Boys (before they sold out) thrown in. I can't tell if it's just an homage or out and out theft.

This is practically outable, because I am so obsessed with this music these days, but you have to check out Six Degrees Records (and to a lesser extent Quango Records) for some excellent mixes of traditional world music and electronica. The results are not always brilliant, and sometimes are terrible, but there is some great great stuff out there.

I do understand that the entire course of musical expression has been a building, growing thing, with each new step based on the last, and with very few actual different combinations available. That's why I mentioned that Clapton never played an original riff. I just saw a qualitative difference between all of that subtle connection and using two lines of the exact words written by someone else in your ow song. But, hey, everybody does it, right?

Dre, Snoop... that's liberally using PFunk and seventies funk influences, and improving on the grooves.

Puff Daddy and that new Eminem song (Dream On)... that's theft. And bad theft. I have yet to see a single redeeming piece of work by P Diddy - he sucks completely in every possible respect.

Since, for much of the history of civilization, women were never given much say in how our societies were organized, I have no doubt that monogomay was instituted as a social norm by men. However, even to this day, women really like it too. Probably even more than men like it.

Honestly, I don't want other men. I am really into my b/f. I don't even really notice other men that way. Perhaps if my b/f starts to get flabby, things would change. But as things stand now, I am hot for him and he is hot for me.
