----Only Olson would talk about Brobeck, and it's likely he may reveal more information in a book he is writing about the final days of the firm. Olson did say he had not expected Brobeck to collapse.---

A BOOK??!!! I guess optimism does spring eternal.

Is anyone writing about the Last Days of Lyon or the Last Days of Skjerven?

merger

I merged the "Last Days" thread into this one, because it seemed to me to belong here instead of off on its own. Please PM me if you disagree.

huh?

from the article:
Parker also told partners they were personally liable for a large portion of the debt. The amount of personal exposure was particularly surprising, one former partner said, since the partnership had voted on a much lower figure in January 2002 when the firm borrowed $40 million from Citibank. At that time the firm projected that average partner recourse would be $261,000 per partner by the end of the year.

"The new numbers disclosed at the partner meeting were a lot larger," the partner said, "maybe two or three times higher."
How could the partners have assumed this liability without knowing it? "Oh, and hey, we ran up your credit card more than you said we could."

Oops we ran up your credit card

Poorly drafted p'ship agreement allows ex-com too much leeway?

Sorry, but you made cherry vanilla soda come out my nose with that one.

Doug Olson jumped from Lyon to Brobeck and in so doing helped to hasten the inevitable demise of Lyon. I hope he talks about Lyon in his book as well as Brobeck. He probably has a lot of interesting insight about both firms; hopefully his book will be candid and honestly critical. If so, the book would be a very good read.

I thought I noticed something oogie on my windshield this morning.

Sidd is probably right though.

What Killed Brobeck?

An article on the subject http://www.lawmarketing.com/publicat...ews/pub457.cfm

It begins: "Among the forces that led to the closing of Brobeck on January 30, 2003, were ineffective leadership, lack of trust among partners and a market position based on a single industry, according to management expert Stephen M. (Pete) Peterson. "

Ugh. As if the SF market weren't depressing enough, now we're going to be blitzed with post-mortems by every two-bit legal consultant from across the land.

Find your favorite partner

If you go to the Brobeck website now, you can get email contact information for the former Brobeck partners.

I notice that several of them have been very successful finding jobs working in the tech sector. I did not know hotmail and yahoo were hiring. :waggle:

Doesn't bug me any, I didn't write it.

I'm at least a 3 bit consultant, and I know nothing about Brobeck.

Brobeck Summer Associates

Does anyone know what happened to the incoming Brobeck summer associates that were slated to begin in March? Were any of them brought over with the partners? If not, life must really suck right now. No job and little prospects for a first years in this market.

Summer Associates? Plural? Ha-Ha-Ha. 500 offers. 1 acceptance.

Orrick faces contempt of court!

Have you read "Be Careful Who You SLAPP" a scathing account of Orrick's attack on free speech? Read the book that Orrick would rather you didn't. Find it on amazon.com or directly from the publisher at http://www.mobeta.com

I think em was talking about the people who had been summer associates back in... 2000? 2001? .... who were given full-time offers, but whose jobs were later "deferred" for a year or so.

My guess is, those people are screwed. Sad to say.

I wonder what happened to the law student who was asking this board (in its former incarnation) whether he should go to Brobeck San Diego. If I recall correctly, he got pretty pissy when some of us suggested that doing so might not be a good career move.
