More to the point, I believe they can if they are supervised by an atty, at least in some states. Haven't you seen Legally Blond???

While the laws in Canada may obviously be quite different, most US states have provisions allowing students to appear in court on behalf of clients, usually as part of a clinic, and usually only under the supervision of an admitted attorney.

In traffic court, yes. The "judge" is actually a justice of the peace. I don't know what you call them here.

Unfortunately yes. In SOME states you still have to be licensed (as a Rule 9 Intern) in order to represent someone in court and to be under the supervision of an attorney. You would NEVER call that person just a law student.

Judge: Ex-Enron execs must stand trial together
Former CEO Ken Lay sought to be tried separately.

HOUSTON - A federal court Tuesday ruled that former Enron Corp. chairman Ken Lay should be tried alongside former executives Jeffrey Skilling and Richard Causey on charges linked to the disgraced energy company's collapse.

In his ruling, Judge Lake said motions to split the case into three trials were denied because the defendants failed to show there was a risk that a joint trial would compromise the defendants' rights or prevent a jury from making a judgmentabout guilt or innocence.

For those reasons, "the court concludes that the defendants have failed to demonstrate that the charges against them ... should be severed," Judge Lake wrote.

However, four charges against Lay for bank fraud and false statements to banks regarding personal loans made to him were severed from the case and will have to be tried separately

YOU might not, but I sure would. Some states might try to dress up the pig more, but around these parts, at least, the clinics have names like "Law Students in Court."

And at least the ones who do criminal law are nonetheless in incredibly high demand, because the defendants know it's better to have the complete attention of a law student than be the 50th case of the day for a public defender. The clinics' win rate in litigation tends to be through the roof.

Where is everyone?

Is it just me, or did the reporter cite the wrong Marshall? I would guess that Specter meant John Marshall. Although Thurgood was a legendary lawyer and player in the civil rights movement, most of the relevant books I recall reading said he was very much a mediocre Supreme.

According to today's Legal Intelligencer (subscription required) Wolf Block has decided to raise first year salaries to $115k, joing a host of other peer firms that have done so in the last 6 weeks. Dechert and MLB are still out in front in the Philadelphai market at $125k.

I am not exactly sure what is prompting this, but it is certainly good news, as it appears that the bonus wheels might start turning once again.
