Come on, TM, you know she left off the first rule, which is "these rules apply for the benefit of whites only."

Of course the rule applies, and if one of the sting ops. caught a cabbie refusing to go somewhere after being told through the window, the T&LC would make the case. They do the same thing in DC--even to whites (happened to me the other night)--asking where you're going before they decide if they're on duty or off duty.

No. They (i) have to stop for you, (ii) can't pull the "off duty" light trick (I've had that pulled even on me, though I can't figure out why - they must have intuited that I am secretly a 300 pound black woman trapped in a mousy little white chick's body, I guess), and (iii) have to go where ever you say where ever you are located when you say it (though, as a practical matter, yes it is easier to be in the cab when you tell him you're going to Astoria).

But what did you expect me to say - it is fine for them to avoid the legal obligations attached to their licenses by being racist?

Seriously, dude, if I were you I'd carry a mini-tape recorder for a week or so and note the medallion numbers of every cab that passes you, and file a complaint about every last one of them with the TLC. Hell, if you just record the numbers & the rough times, I'll do the paperwork for you (it's fuckin' slow around here anyway). The TLC can't crack down and take their licenses unless they get reported, and if they suffer no penalty there is no reason for them not to keep doing it. It might be a pain in the ass, and you shouldn't have to do it, but it might make you feel better to report some of the assholes and know that at least someone is geting this shit on their employment records and isn't just letting them get away with it.

eta: besides, the simple sight of you reading their information into a recorder may convince them to pick you up thinking you are part of a sting anyway

I don't know how it works in NYC, but in DC merely filing a complaint leads to a hearing that the cabbie has to show up for (or lose a license). Even if you don't show as a witness, you've taken several hours out of his day to go sit at the TC. All of a sudden, that trip to the outer boroughs stops looking like such a time suck.

Interesting. We just received a copy of our dress code 2 weeks ago. Apparently there were many violations that triggered a revisit. Ours is tremendously vague. We can wear corduroy. And I would certainly hope none of your piercings would show - I'd hate to think your Janet Jackson nipple badge would get you into any trouble.

I would like to take a moment to gloat at Paigow's expense.

I'm sure everyone will remember that I posted "I forget who said it, but whoever said they were liking Lex and the move to get rid of Jerri instead of Amber is a moron."

That moron, of course, was Paigow, who responded "At first I thought it was a bad idea bc in a merge situcation, they are going in equally numbered up and Rob is voting against them in any event. but then I thought about it some more. I dont see why Rob would have any huge loyalty to Rupert who he seems to hate, or reallyanyone on his tribe other than Amber . But, he did pull that godfather move whicvh means I think he would return the favor at least in the short tmer and knock off a couple of people from his old (current) tribe. so basically rather than knock off one person on the other tribe, they added two to their tribe while losing one. zero sum. he probably keeps the loyalty of his current tribemates, and has two physically strong people in his camp. these folks probably wont win in a jury situation. so i think it is probalby an okay move. otherwise, he just kicks off amber and is stuck with his consistnetly losing team. He probalby also gets some guy bonding shit by hooking with Rob. I dont see whats moronic about it."

I'm not sure who is the bigger imbicile - Paigow or Lex. What made it even better was Lex quasi-crying about Rob "stabbing him in the back" after he had done the same to Jerri. For a so-called student of the game, he was one dumb mother. The proof is that his thought processes imitated Paigow's. Q.E.D.

OK Computer was one of the best albums of the 90's. Moving away from the lyrics, if you want to hear how good Radiohead's music is, listen to Christopher O'Riley's album of solo piano transcriptions. Radiohead has a ton of musical talent.

I'm not buying anything from The Darkness or Von Blondies, and I understand the criticism about liking the next big thing just because it's new, but if you listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic (or Weekend Become Eclectic) you'll hear interesting new music.

Str8 must be my sockpuppet because I just bought some Emmylou Harris recently as well.

Paigow should listen to Kings of Leon. I don't have it, but I've heard it, and I think Paigow would like it. Southern fried Strokes is how one critic described it.

Concur. Also check out Brad Mehlau's jazz combo interpretations of "Exit Music (For a Film)" and "Everything in Its Right Place." Good brunch music. I'd love to hear him do an entire album a la O'Riley.

I only know "California Waiting" (thanks, iTunes!). Good stuff; bought two versions of it. It's also known as "sleaze rock," which is right up Paigow's alley.

Anyone liking Kings of Leon should also consider Grandaddy, Guster (duh), The Thrills. Further away from folk/sleaze rock and more singer/songwriter is Damien Rice, who is a cross between The Jayhawks and Elliot Smith.

I don't remember who recommended Modest Mouse, but WTF? That shit is like the lovechild born after Pavement and Negativland DPed They Might Be Giants in a drunken threeway behind the KFC. It has its place, but hardly Paigow's thing.
