Sometimes I think so, sometimes I'm not sure. I know enough lawyers who could easily retire, and maintain their current lifestyles right through the day they die -- yet they keep on working. I have a few colleagues in this boat, and I've dealt with some other lawyers on cases I've had (espeically plaintiff-side class action guys who hit it big, repeatedly), and they keep on working and very happy about it.

Maybe they're senior enough to make everyone else deal with the bullshit, maybe they just like the sense of what they've accomplished and built and want to further that.

I hope that when I'm their age, I have that same sense (and the accomplishments to back it up). Or, I have enough cash to make the choice that they are not making. Either/or, I'm flexible.
A member of my extended family has Parkinson's and is in a nursing home. He "practiced" the way semi-retired lawyers do until he entered the nursing home. I hadn't seen him in a while and saw him last weekend. When he had the chance, his eyes lit up and he asked me how my practice is going. It was clear he would be back in his office in a minute if he could.

You are even more stupid and clueless than I previously thought if you think that I would consider this a betrayal, or be surprised by it if I did.

No, no, no. Thurgreed lied about HER being unattractive. In his heart of hearts, at the end of the day, when it all comes down to brass tacks and gets baked in, he KNOWS she's attractive.

Cake

Why is everyone always complaining about how someone else wants their cake and wants to eat it too? Of course I want to have my cake and eat it too. I like cake. I like eating it, and I want to have it also, in case I want to eat it in the future. Not only do I want to have my cake and eat it too. I want to simultaneously have my cake, eat my cake, shove my cake up the ass of my second worst enemy, and force feed the cake that was shoved up the ass of Flower Enemy #2 to Flower Enemy #1. And I also want that same cake to be floating in the air behind the next person who compains to me about my wanting to have my cake and eat it to so I can see the cake and have pleasant cake-related thoughts as I repeatedly stab that person in the eyes.

I'm not being greedy. I just like cake.

Itunes has really hit a niche: satisfy people who want instant music gratification. Think of song, search for song, buy song and listen to song, all in 1 minute. I haven't bought a bit of music any other way in 18 months. CD stores are going to go the way of the record stores, the way of the TV repair shop.

One question: why are cars so far behind in audio technology? Does anyone even use the regular cd player any more? All I have is an ipod shuffle specifically for the car that plugs right in.

I would love something with a USB port that allows me to scroll through the songs on an ipod.

I had tried and won my first contigency case and settled it. the settlement was low 7 figures (not the firm's take the whole thing) but we stepped in late and it was a great feeling- and was really a very nice payday- as I say my first contingency.

The day the money got wired, I read this knucklehead had gotten a $165 MILLION verdict against Microsoft.

He'll still go to work, because "going to work" includes going to London next week if he wants.
The key is business development. If you have that gene, you too can work 4 days a month, take summers off, send the kids to Choate and have someone else drive you around while the worker bees check your shit for typos.

Thing is, none of the people I'm talking about work four days a month. They are all full time lawyers, and happy as pigs in shit.

Though the biz dev is a key ingredient to this, absolutely.
