I was speaking specifically about my once hot, now not, little burgh.

Here, we have a four-year backlog of inventory of houses in the once $400k-750k market.

There are some tony neighborhoods where every other house is for sale.

Why would you buy such a big house then? And why do you clean it yourself? Seems like such a waste of precious time.

I fell in love with the house and got such a great deal on it ($47 a sq foot in an area where new homes are cropping up at $100+ per sq ft) so I bought it. I just can't get used to hiring somebody to clean it -- I guess a throwback to the fact that my mom always took care of the house plus my frugality. I can multi-task though -- I put the baseball or hockey game on the intercom and can listen throughout the entire house while I clean. It isn't all that bad -- cleaning can be a bit relaxing at times and at least it provides a sense of pride and accomplishment. It wouldn't be such a chore if I wasn't such a neat freak, I suppose. It does seem like sort of a waste but I wouldn't want to give up the house so I just muddle through.

Out here, they are generally new McMansions, bought solely for the prestige factor of having something huge in a place where a nondescript 2000 sf runs well over $500k.

If you can buy a place like that out here, you can afford to hire--hell, buy-- people to clean it for you.

I too do all of my own cleaning, but that is mainly because I don't like the idea of a stranger in my house. If you have a lot of hardwood floors, Roomba, the robot vacuum is a must. It will do all the floors while I am dusting and cleaning bathrooms or mowing the lawn or something, and it does a much better job than I could do, cleaning under all the furniture and such.

Thanks for the tip -- I will look into it. I find that the new Floormate does wonders on tile and wood floors and I use mine religiously -- it is a good companion to the steamer I have for the carpeted rooms. I also like the Swiffer-type dusters for cat hair under the couches on wood.

I too find the idea of a stranger in my house odd -- my husband says that if I ever broke down and hired someone I would probably spend all of my time cleaning the place so it looks nice before the cleaning person arrives (he is probably right).

I am all about hiring a maid. I used to think it was a crazy extravagance, but now I think that having free time that is not spent cleaning is worth the $130 per month I pay. I have no problem with keeping stuff tidy anyway but I don't want to spend my weekends cleaning toilets and floors (have always hated those two chores in particular). I figure that if I am going to spend the amount of time working that I do, having someone take care of chores for me (since I have no stay-at-home spouse, actually no spouse at all) and using my free time for more enjoyable pursuits is the only thing that makes the hard work tolerable.

If you get some pleasure out of the housework, go for it... I just really don't.

Yes! Anything but really thick shag. It will work on normal pile carpet too just fine. I use it in the bedroom and was astounded at how much dust there was in the carpet under the beds and chairs. I just noted that it's cleaning ability relative to me with a broom is vastly superior. I do have a really thick shag rug in the living room, and it sees that as a barrier when it's cleaning the hardwood. I only have to vacuum that one rug and one flight of stairs. Roomba does a wonderful job of cleaning all of the stupid carpet fuzz from the rug (still sheds after a year!!!) and getting pet hair dust bunnies.
