Ronald Reagan on Mugabe:

"As the first Prime Minister of Africa's newest independent state, his wise leadership has been a crucial factor in healing the wounds of civil war and developing a new nation with new opportunities."

President Bush. I'd like to take this opportunity just to welcome President Mugabe here to the Oval Office. I met him many years ago on a visit to his country and have seen him several times since then. But I'm just so pleased you're with us -- --

It sure is fun taking little snippets of quotes totally out of context, isn't it? Whoo hoo!

Totally. I could rain these suckers down like a fig tree casteth off her untimely figs in a mighty wind.

Funny -- I don't recall that man in the picture with Hussein being the President of the United States. What year was that? I also don't remember any U.S. President describing Hussein as "exemplifying the finest aspects of humanity in achieving liberty and justice". Unless Jimmy Carter said it in private (which I'm sure would shock us all).

But...since we're having fun with hand shaking pictures, I see your commendreams.org photo and raise you one:

Now, darling, with Jimmy Carter you just KNOW there are more where that came from. Including bad photoshops.

PS to S.A.M.: Our lovely ex president has a Jewish problem. Everyone knows that.

I know this may be hard for you to follow, but taking a gratuitous shot at Donald Rumsfeld is not defending Robert Mugabe.

I am reasonably sure that I have posted more on this board about how fucked up Zimbabwe is recently than you have, and that I've done it in a context where I wasn't trying to score points off conservatives.

What is his "Jewish problem"?

eta: Must be his honorary degrees from Weizmann Institute of Science, 1980; Tel Aviv University, 1983; and Haifa University, 1987.

It's a common response on this board when you expose some foolish- ass thing done by someone who happens to be a democrat. They rush to find a Republican who's done something bad. As if it somehow makes it okay for Jimmy Carter to act dumb ass because a former Secretary of State who's Republican shook a commie's hand once. And the old "post pics of exec. branch w/ enemies" game.

You know - like this sort of thing:

I was too young to vote then. But I still don't remember Rummie as President. Probably, Bilmore voted for him though.

Ricks

For fans of WaPo and Fiasco, Thomas Ricks had an interview yesterday on Fresh Air which was pretty good, and covered a wide variety of stuff, including the surge. Stuff that I did not know, but know now, included the following:

* Even if the order were given tomorrow to evacuate entirely and immediately, it would take 12-18 months to get everyone and everything out. We have a massive, massive amount of equipment and materiel in Iraq, and basically one road back to Kuwait. Even if we ran 30 convoys a day every day, each with 100 or so trucks, it would take 10 months to get it all out.

* The military is planning to try and push congress and the administration away from the current, simplistic, and false dichotomy of Stay Indefinitely at Full Strength, or Leave Entirely, because it's a bullshit argument. Neither are practical, real-world solutions, because with the former, we simply can't stay at current levels beyond March or so without breaking the Army, and for the latter, if we completely leave the bloodbath will be just that. So, in September, don't look for a thumbs-up or thumbs down from the military's report. Instead, look for the military to press decisionmakers to think about what they really want the next steps to be.

Excellent! You and I agree then that Rumsfeld was not the President in 1983. Amidst the pointless rancor and perfervid Mugabe loving of this board, that's a small point of agreement that gives me hope for America's future.
