Oh, my, must we go through the basic history lesson again?

You may want to look at some of the choice words that Hoover had for FDR, or a bit of the color Van Buren visited on his successors, or perhaps even a little bit of John Adams' endless whining about his successors. From what I can figure out, this notion that current Presidents don't get criticized by past Presidents dates roughly to the period in the 70s when all the former Presidents were either dead or looking to avoid time up river.

on foreign policy? Cite please. I don't care if he said bush is crazy because of his stem cell position. however, in a world where Osama is the most popular boy's name in lots of Muslim countries I worry when an ex-prez says stuff that could push it towards 100%.

Hoover was a big isolationist, and staunchly opposed the US getting into WW2. For a cite, you can pull pretty much any book about Roosevelt or Hoover off the shelves. How old are your kids? If they have a sixth grade textbook that's probably a good bet.

When Jimmy Carter expresses concern for the plight of Palestinians, you guys develop a remarkable concern for the sensitivities of the Arab street. Apparently Arabs aren't going to notice what's happening in Gaza unless Jimmy Carter tells them.

It's quite a contrast to the concern you usually show for the prospect that things Americans say will rile up Arabs.

My kids don't have american history. they got "reducing Your Negative Social And environmental Footprint" or sometihng. so unless Hoover criticized Roosevelt on some early draft of Kyoto, it won't help.

But let me treat it as an SJ motion. I was talking about criticizing a decision. You seem to be talking about trying to influence a future decision. Or did hoover keep it up after December 7?

Why hasn't anyone called Carter a Traitor yet?

The Rs have always been deeply conflicted about the first amendment - there are the Sebby's, unreservedly committed to free speech, and then there are the Hanks, the Bushes, and the Falwells of the world.

G.O.

I wanna make sure I'm on solid ground here. Can you do me a favor, I'm thinking about one possible exception to my general statement- can you see if any Democrat ex-Presidents didn't criticize emancipation?

Dude. free speech? WTF? I realize we can't jail or fine Carter. Sometimes, when a person has a big important job, they have to think about whether not saying something might be a good idea. That's all.

You're hoping I'll check the filing cabinets in my office?

Bored with building and executing its own separate foreign policy apparatus, the Vice President's office has moved on to start writing John Stewart's and Stephen Colbert's own material. Time to step it up, fellas!

I like that they did not respond to the Archives office's letters in kind, but rather by trying to have the office eliminated. If only Cheney's formidable skills at bureaucratic combat were of some use outside Washington D.C.

You think he didn't use this in business?

BWAHAHAHOAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Welcome to Corporate America, chump. Where it's not necessarily breaking the law, and it doesn't get attention until there's an overall collapse, but it contributes to things like how Enron happened.

He HONED that shit in business. He was successful in business because of this stuff.

He's still the president of the Senate, right?

I'm with Hank on this general principle.

However, I don't think that Carter is the first one to say something critical of a successor's foreign policy decisions (I am pretty sure that Ike was all over JFK on Bay of Pigs and the Vienna summit, and Hoover was all over Truman for firing MacArthur and failing to "unleash Chiang"), so I think that it's more than a bit disingenuous to pretend otherwise. And when President Gravel gives Texas back to Mexico, I suspect that those who are outraged by Carter's mouth will praise the patriotism of W for speaking out against it.

Diane disclaimer: Carter is an idiot for saying stuff about the Mideast in general, and for blaming the US and Israel for the PA's civil war in particular.

Ten bucks says that's on Addington's list of arguments.
