You may want to look at some of the choice words that Hoover had for FDR, or a bit of the color Van Buren visited on his successors, or perhaps even a little bit of John Adams' endless whining about his successors. From what I can figure out, this notion that current Presidents don't get criticized by past Presidents dates roughly to the period in the 70s when all the former Presidents were either dead or looking to avoid time up river.

Hoover was a big isolationist, and staunchly opposed the US getting into WW2. For a cite, you can pull pretty much any book about Roosevelt or Hoover off the shelves. How old are your kids? If they have a sixth grade textbook that's probably a good bet.

It's quite a contrast to the concern you usually show for the prospect that things Americans say will rile up Arabs.

My kids don't have american history. they got "reducing Your Negative Social And environmental Footprint" or sometihng. so unless Hoover criticized Roosevelt on some early draft of Kyoto, it won't help.

But let me treat it as an SJ motion. I was talking about criticizing a decision. You seem to be talking about trying to influence a future decision. Or did hoover keep it up after December 7?

I'm with Hank on this general principle.

However, I don't think that Carter is the first one to say something critical of a successor's foreign policy decisions (I am pretty sure that Ike was all over JFK on Bay of Pigs and the Vienna summit, and Hoover was all over Truman for firing MacArthur and failing to "unleash Chiang"), so I think that it's more than a bit disingenuous to pretend otherwise. And when President Gravel gives Texas back to Mexico, I suspect that those who are outraged by Carter's mouth will praise the patriotism of W for speaking out against it.
