There are a number of distinctions I could point out. But I will just note perhaps the most important: A radio station playing an oldies hit has followed the path of least resistance. You hear the same song over and over again and begin to convince yourself that you like it, not because of the inherent worth of the song, but because of the comforting recognition. This sort of reptition is bland and numbing. Less' post, on the other hand, bears repeating precisely because it is not the comforting message that we have been hearing over and over. It is a message that asks us to do something different than passively and unthinkingly turn on our classic rock station and listen to the same drivel simply because we can hum the chorus or sing along. Unlike our passive acceptance of hearing the oldies ad nauseum, we are resistant to Less' message - we don't want to hear it; we would rather listen to that old Michael Jackson tune that reminds us of having a crush on Suzie Witherspoon in junior high. Thus, Less' post needs to be repeated, as often as possible, so that there is at least a tiny possibility that some small part of the message will sink in to the tiny brains of some small fraction of you morons.

If I were truly sorry for appearing cranky this morning, I would apologize and blame it on after effects of the Pisco Sours I enjoyed last night. But I am not so I will not.

Usually, at the NBA draft, you get a bunch of clueless kids who have never worn a suit before trying to out bling each other and ending up looking stupid as hell.

Lebron James, the number one pick and a kid straight outta high school, showed surprisingly good taste. His all white suit looked great.

thank you for this clarification. your earlier post was the same as an oldie station. the alternative to the oldie station is I suppose some "alternative" station that plays shit that sounds like a song Buzzcocks or Roxy Music or Gang of Four could have done in 1978. The familar sound is still there, its just not as familar. The difference is nothing more than pretension. the parallel to "a way to go post" on this board and pop music is still there. oldies stations and this board are 95% pablum to waste a first moments of your day with a gentle buzz, but upon reflection your realize the song (or post) is ultimately trite. the other 5% has merit. but not the posts in question. the realization you are becoming your parents or fighting the urge to ease into being your parents by intentionally avoiding what you would otherwise do, this is your crusade? its like Margaret said in Liquid Sky to the old hippie "and you all wore blue jeans as a symbol to show you won't conform- at least realize you're in uniform?"

There is an AOL add running every 30 seconds somewhere on my local TWC. When ever I hear that insufferable girl in the 5 seconds they give her of that ad, I want to put my fist through the television.

Almost all music is derivative crap. It's not bad enough that we listen to the songs of our youth. We also willingly accept the pablum the record industry spoons into our heads that recreates the music of our youth.

Alt-rock commits the biggest sin for not embracing its inherent derivative crapitude. (Yes, the good ones do and then spin it into something new and interesting.) I spent 5 hours listening to an excellent commercial free alt-rock station this week and I had to keep checking the display because I was convinced they were playing the same song over and over and over and over from 1992.

A new study shows that pot smoking does not cause brain damage and has almost no effect on cognitive function or memory. There goes the OM's excuse for why he can never remember anything.

Smoking marijuana will certainly affect perception, but it does not cause permanent brain damage, researchers from the University of California at San
Diego said on Friday in a study.

"The findings were kind of a surprise. One might have expected to see more impairment of higher mental function," said Dr. Igor Grant, a UCSD professor of psychiatry and the study's lead author. Other illegal drugs, or even alcohol, can
cause brain damage.

His team analyzed data from 15 previously published, controlled studies into the impact of long-term, recreational cannabis use on the neurocognitive ability of adults.

The studies tested the mental functions of routine pot smokers, but not while they were actually high, Grant said.

The results, published in the July issue of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, show that marijuana has only a marginally harmful long-term effect on learning and memory.

No effect at all was seen on other functions, including reaction time, attention, language, reasoning ability, and perceptual and motor skills.

I totally agree. However, do you think maybe some people like looking back at early 80's videos because they were pretty genuine (and goofy) rather than totally prepackaged and manipulative like all videos are today? It's more like celebrating authenticity and rejecting today's pablum (although I agree it's all pablum).

That said, the only music I enjoy listening to these days is opera. I'm very conservative so I tend to like what pleases my ear, so that tends to be traditional - I go to about one modern opera each season and am generally pretty disappointed. It is hard to try to like new things when somebody has mastered what you like hearing so well.
