The Fashion of Baby Names
Am I the only one who thinks you should give your kids "normal" first names, especially boys, so they don't get the crap kicked out of them in grade school? I have a vanilla first name, and it was still hard, but jesus, I felt bad for the boys in my class named Shannon, Engel and Sequoia. Those guys were teased mercilessly and hassled on a daily basis, except for Shannon, who grew into a very very large kid and began doling out punishment on his own.
I think you can be more creative with girls' names, but within reason. If you want to be really creative, save it for their middle name, and let them decide later on what they want to be called. It just seems cruel to burden a kid with a funky name, especially when they are young and don't particularly want to be set apart from the crowd. Just my $0.02. |

Clearly. Back to names, all three of my names are very common. There are many women wandering around with the same exact name as mine. For years I thought about changing it but then I figured it actually is a pretty enough name, and I'm used to it, and what would I change it to? But it is a pain when I go to the doctor and they have trouble differentiating me from the other women and probably, a little bit dangerous. One of these days they are going to cut off my leg and the defense wil be, but there was another Leagleaze who needed her left leg off, how were we to know? I can see it now. I however won't hire gattigap to handle my case. He would just mess it up, I can tell from the posts. I wouldn't hire penske either though, cause he is very confused. |
Baby Names/Utah Names
I think the Utah names list is over-inclusive. Perhaps all those names have actually been used by Utah Mormons, but a much smaller percentage of them are quintessentially Utah-Mormon, imo. Amasa, for instance, was the name of a notable early Mormon, Amasa Lyman, but that name is much older and does not spring from the Utah Mormon tradition.
And TM, you misunderstood me--I'm all for unusual names (none of my picks for future girls or boys are in the top 1000), but without funky spelling, capitalization or punctuation. Your name passes on both counts, mine only on the former. As far as talking about chosen names beforehand, there are pros and cons. It seems like everyone knows at least one horror story of a favorite name being "stolen" by a friend/relative/acquaintance. However, I think some talking is good, especially among people you trust. They can tell you if a name is too out there or too popular, or reassure you that it's not. And if you have a family like mine, you can "dibs" names for future use and expect that no one will "steal" them. tm Edited to add that the Utah names site also seems to ignore the phenomenon of nicknames as given names. I have known a Nate and a Becky (not Nathan or Rebecca), and an adoption client at a firm where I once worked was choosing between Skyler and Chet Ronny (after his daddy) for her newborn son (he ended up with Skyler). |
