I saw U of Minnesota basketball last night. Now it has a guy with the Pippi Longstocking thing. I still haven't seen this anywhere but on Minnesota basketball teams.

So the fight- the fat black guy in a white shirt hitting Artest from behind? David Wallace- Ben's brother. He's been charged.

Ben Wallace is one of 11 kids, raised by sharecroppers. I think its safe to say Ben's first NBA contract had to be a pretty good day for the family. Does seeing the meal ticket threatened by Artest's cheap shot provide some sort of excuse for David to go after him?

This probably comes from the author being a relatively assertive guy. I know many guys who are mortified to approach a woman they do not already know, and some of them are otherwise great guys.

I think this standard is probably off, but perhaps not by much. Maybe the better standard is that if you ask a guy out, be prepared to take no as an answer. If you have to talk him into it, he's just not that into you.

This is just stupid. Although some guys are quite good at picking up signals, some aren't. If you reduce your field to guys who ask you out, you deserve to miss out on that really nice shy guy that has all the other characteristics you want.

You shouldn't wait by the fucking phone. That's you're fault, not his. I assume this is the old, "I'll call you soon" bit where you define "soon" as over the next 3 days or whatever. Either call him after a reasonable amount of time or shut up. You should be living your life the same way whether someone promises to call or not.

Again, stupid. You should not go out with a man thinking that he is going to be your next significant relationship if he isn't sure he wants to date you. But, you can go out and have fun. Fix your expectations based on what you've been told. If you want a serious relationship, don't go out with him.

This one seems obvious. But when it comes to how sexually desirable women feel, they're almost all headcases. Any little thing you say will be blown out of proportion because of the baggage you have in this area. If you're with someone and they've put on a few, it is next to impossible to let that person know that you find them more attractive without the extra pounds because any comment is translated into: "You think I am completely undesirable."

I don't even know why this is listed as a rule. What's next? I won't go out with a man who forces me to play russian roulette with him on alternate Thursdays?

Are women incapable of being in a casual relationship altogether? I suppose this book is aimed at those women who can't possibly recognize one on their own, but still.

Ha. This is rich. How many relationships are strong and healthy that start with the woman turning the man down the first dozen times? Perfectly acceptable. If a man does it once, stay away because they are incapable of changing their minds and are planning on hurting you. Ridiculous.

I think this is a lesson that needs to be learned by members of both sexes. Taking no for an answer is a lost skill, it seems, in a world where everyone seems to think they have a right to know "why."

I think this one is listed, appropriately so, because some (a lot of?) women tend to date guys based on who they think the guy could be (with time and proper encouragement), not who he is. Lots of women are little miss fixits, and somebody doing too many drugs is a prime fixit candidate.

This is one reason I think the Rules were probably excellent advice for one hell of a lot of women - it makes them deal with what the guy is doing and saying NOW, not in some fantasy future-world when he has realized he adores you/wants to change/matures/is ready to commit/his divorce is final/whatever.

2 couples I know still together from college break this "rule."

In one the guy was like a puppy dog in love with this girl. She kept dodging him, turning him down and actually making fun of him behind his back. She finally gave him a chance. He bought her roses and took her to a decent restaurant. The change from her normal date of free beer at a party got her to at least give him a second date. They're still married.

Another guy was the opposite- he's sleeping around on this girl who was completely in love with him. He kept telling her crap like:

"You should be happy doing my laundry and cooking for me. I don't know who you'll end up with, but it will be the kind of guy who'll expect you to do that shit, because you can't stand sensitive guys. Just get used to it."

I though the "I'm just trying to help you learn to be what you'll need to be for some other guy" was pretty cold. She stuck with it and they have been married for years.

Both seem like pretty even relationships now, even though they were quite one-sided for a long while. I don't think you can make rules about how people are with relationships.
