Continuation of my saga from a long time ago (spring 2001)
Look, I'm sorry I started all of this, and I wish there were no reason to get so excited.
I will say I find the "kike" word offensive and agree with Leagl that putting a couple asterisks in fuck while using a word like that is something worth thinking about. And, Jesus_Just_Left_Chicago, I'm sorry about making my own assumptions about your religion, and I'm glad you are religious whatever it is. Not only do they dance in my hometown, but they have movie theaters and video rental stores, too, and I can deal with a little cynicism about religion. Take your shots, it's better than putting religion in a closet. Casting aspersions on my sense of humor, however, is a different matter (I really thought the "all knowing" thing was kind of funny, wasn't it?). If you're looking for information on my religion, I am a Jehovah's Witness, not a Morman, and used the moniker "Watchtower" because it is the name of a publication that is sitting in my office. And if someone could send me the contact information for that place that shaves muffs, I'd appreciate it. |

JJLC likely went too far in dismissing somebody's beliefs and patronizing it in general. I likely went too far in my rebuttal. |

Well, I had to lay off a bit when the Lil Fan started calling his dad a fascist like I was. Jack-booted thug works better cuz the little guy ends up fucking it up and it sounds cute (something like jack booby bug). It doesn't help that I have a lead foot and the hubby appears to be shooting for the department record in the ticket-writing category -- of course, I can still use him to get out of tickets which is why he is kept alive (and, of course, the handcuffs). He was just telling me how he nabbed a dude with weed -- I told him that perhaps if he and his fascist buddies would leave the working-man (and glaucoma sufferers) alone and go after some real crime maybe the public would like them better (and I would sex him more often and maybe be sober while doing it) but I don't think they give a fuck what the public thinks. edited to instruct PJ that they don't carry billy-clubs anymore -- most coppers carry either an ASP or a PR-24, baby. For my hubby it is an ASP in addition to the 9mm in the belt and mini-9mm on the ankle. Its actually kinda hot in a fucked-up way. |

Calling someone a "kike" is clearly meant to offend. The user of such a term intended to be shallow, so I think your focus is a little off. When people revert to the first racial or ethnic slur when they get pissed, it's a sure sign that that shit wasn't far below the surface in the first place. TM |

What is the origin of the word "kike"? There are many explanations: One explanation is that the word kike originates from the word "keikl", in Yiddish, which means "circle". At Ellis Island, one of the main immigration checkin points, immigrants were intially grouped by religion and language in order to make it easier for them to communicate with each other and also to be identified more quickly by waiting relatives there to meet them. Christians were marked off with an 'X' which was likely really supposed to be a cross; Jews were marked with a circle which was really likely supposed to be the Star of David. It is easy to see how the staff could become sloppy at drawing these symbols as 'x' and 'o'. The word "keikl" was used by the Jews making fun of the poorly drawn star; they referred to each other as being 'circles'. Unfortunately, from this innocent usage, the term aquired a derogatory meaning. Robert L. Chapman's "American Slang" has a slight variation on the above. Rather than saying the circle was a mark made by the staff to symbolize the Star-of-David, the book says: "Jews who could not sign their names would make a circle." This suggests that it was Jews themselves who started using the circle- presumably to avoid the X which was reminiscent of a cross. According to "Our Crowd", by Stephen Birmingham, the term kike was actually coined as a putdown by assimilated American German Jews for their Eastrern-European bretheren: "Because many Russian [Jewish] names ended in 'ki', they were called 'kikes'- a German Jewish contribution to the American vernacular. (Germans are also said to have invented the term "Bohunk", referring to Jews from Bohemia.)". Following this explanation, the name kike was deliberately coined to put-down Jews- but only a certain subset of Jews. The name then proceeded to be co-opted by Gentiles and used against all Jews in general. Robert L. Chapman's "American Slang" also notes that the word could be a reference to "Ike", a nickname for Isaac. http://www.shamash.org/lists/scj-faq...faq/19-13.html aV |

Obviously being an atheist has nothing to do with it. And being raised Baptist has nothing to do with it. And dating someone Jewish has nothing to do with it. Wasn't that the whole point? Of ALL the posts? |

Most who go do church dismiss the actions of the radicals. But, like raving feminists and leftists, the "volume" of the extreme Right garners lots of attention. |

Being offended, which is the intent of using an offensive word, is not shallow. It's precisely the reaction Virus wanted. He just offended more people than his target. |
