Texas is like NYC in this single respect: everything fabulous and unique about it has been SO THOUROUGHLY SHOVED DOWN OUR THROATS by its expatriates and tourism boards that I feel pretty confident I'd know as much as I need to even if I hadn't visited. Its regional pride borders on the recockulously snobbish, like they've been brainwashed to pretend to feel sorry for people not from there. Unlike, say, Chicago, whose charms are not best communicated by its former residents, but by visiting. Or Cleveland, Phila., etc., which often have slightly more charms than their respective expats would lead you believe. New Yorkers and Texans oversell.

BTW, when I ask expat tejanos in S.F. "What's so great about Texas?" the answer is universal: Austin. YMM, but probably will not, V.

Absolutely Positively Very First Reality TV Post in This Thread

So, who watched Last Comic Standing last night? I thought it was a bit bogus that they gave out like 10 offers in NY and then had only one to give out in each of the last two cities (Chicago and Tampa). And then they gave the one spot in Tampa to the guy who is already a regular on Colin Quinn's show. What is the premise again? Is it to find unknown talent or to find people who are already known who will make America laugh? Just checking, because I really didn't watch much of the first season.

My favorite joke of the night - guy in SF (I think) saying something along the lines of:

"I don't really get Governor Schwartzenager's marriage, but I think that it might be the first phase in a genetic experiment to create a bulletproof Kennedy."

Is he right, lizard?

If you lived somewhere other than SF you might have some cred.
